REDUCED COST OF OWNERSHIP

REDUCED COST OF OWNERSHIP

Global automaker Volkswagen AG hasn't been the flavour of the month for more years than I care to remember. Their unpopularity started with the emissions scandal that engulfed the company for cheating on emissions tests over a period of six years; not to mention the recalls and poor customer service at virtually all their service centers globally that further pissed off their clients. It was their initial denial, arrogance  and passing of the buck by high ranking VW executives that severely angered VW car owners. The cheating and lying of these individuals compromised most VW owners globally because the trade-in value of their vehicles fell substantially. Dealers were saddled with VW vehicles cars that wouldn't sell because the general public eschewed VW with a passion.

In an attempt to win back customer confidence, Volkswagen is offering a six-year or 72,000 miles warranty on two of its all new big-ass 2018 sport utility vehicles (SUVs). This new 72,000 miles, (120 000 km) warranty surpasses, the industry-standard of 60,000 mile (100 000km) by a good 20 000 km or 1 year's worth of driving. Generally sport utility vehicles only come with a standard three-year/36,000-mile warranty whereas Volkswagen  announced  their enhanced warranty for both their 2018 Atlas and Tiguan SUVs. According to Hinrich Woebcken, Chief Executive Officer for Volkswagen Group of America, the objective of this extended warranty is to reduce the cost of ownership for the owners of these new Volkswagen SUVs. The new 4Motion AllWheel Drive VW Alas shares the MQB platform with the Mk7 Golf hatchback; and it can park itself, it can do so even do so in  perpendicular parking spaces. It monitors blind spots and  resist errant lane changes, and even sports the ability to adaptively cruise  in stop-and-go traffic.

The interior of the Atlas is aesthetically pleasing and cavernous with three rows of seats that provides comfortably seating for  seven adults. It also sports a  meaningful cargo space behind the third-row seat, which when folded flat extends to a user-friendly deck for loading. The Atlas is propelled by a 2.0-litre turbo L4, with an eight-speed automatic front-wheel drive, whereas the 3.6-litre V-6 engine version comes in all-wheel drive. These big-ass SUVs are what Big-ass Americans want, and the Atlas is designed to accommodate the biggest asses you can imagine. The Atlas of the forerunner to the new-look, completely redesigned Tiguan compact SUV destined to be built in  Mexico. This 5-door, 5-seat Tiguan SUV is available in two 1.4 TSI engines, the first as a 92kW for both the Trendline (manual only) and Comfortline manual, while Comfortline auto (DSG) gets the 110kW version.  The 2.0 TSI 162kW top of the range Tiguan with Golf GTI power will be available shortly, to be followed by the 2.0 TDI engines that are available in 81kW, 105kW or 130kW. The Tiguan is sold in some 170 countries globally, which makes this SUV one of the important vehicles in the Volkswagen stable alongside the Golf, Polo and Passat.

However, regardless of the newest and the latest in VW motion, the Diesel emission scandal is still haunting the automaker and in the wake of their admission of guilt, Volkswagen executives agreed to spend up to $25 billion in the USA, to settle legal claims brought against them by Volkswagen owners,  state governments, environmental regulators and VW car dealers. They even offered to buy back about half a million  diesel vehicles that are known to be polluting the USA. In an attempt to rebuild goodwill, Volkswagen offered to pay out $1,000 in cash or dealership credits to VW vehicle owners who can also receive a free 24-hour road service for three years. Over and above this, VW dealers will offer them a $2,000 cash rebate toward their  new car purchase.

Volkswagen's hopes to become the world’s largest automaker after being in this top spot for only two months, were dashed after Toyota Motor Corp reported global production figures of almost a quarter million ahead of Volkswagen today. The  Renault-Nissan Alliance with Mitsubishi also pulled ahead of Volkswagen, leaving this giant German car maker in 3rd spot. For now at leat, but what will the future hold?

VOLKSWAGEN SHARE PRICE

VOLKSWAGEN SHARE PRICE

In the German language, Volkswagen means "The People's Car". However, the People as a whole are energetically rejecting Volkswagen cars in favour of other brands of automobiles. Volkswagen (VW) as a company has suffered  tremendous financial losses and has fallen from grace because of the cheating devices that gave rise to the emissions scandal that affected 11 Million vehicle globally. The cheating German auto manufacturer, recently announced a EUR4.1 Billion euros (USD4.6 Billion) operating loss for the year 2015 and set aside an additional sum of EUR16.2 Billion (USD18.2 Billion) to pay for its diesel emissions test-rigging scandal. But regardless of the amount of money Volkswagen is throwing at the problem,  the VW share price had already plummeted from US$244.30 in early April 2015 to US$166.98 by mid September 2015. This 32% decline in share price slipped  even further by a whopping 18.5% to close at USD 136.15 by of third week April 2016. So within one year and two  weeks the Volkswagen share price fell by a massive 44.3% in  value.

Volkswagen's USD 18.2 Billion shlush fund is destined to cover the costs of legal expenses, penalties, claims, recalls and vehicle buy back from all the countries affected by the diesel emissions cheat software, essentially to cover all cost incurred last year. Somehow this  US$18.2 billion  is likely to be just the beginning of their woes because on Thursday 21 April 2016, a US federal judge announced that Volkswagen promised the  US government that they will buy back as many as 482,000 diesel cars, as well as pay all penalties to make up for the  pollution generated by their cars.

Having said that, it's been a very bad week for German automakers as a whole because a US attorney seizing an opportunity to make hoards of money, has sued Daimler over Mercedes Benz's diesel pollution. He hired a company to test Mercedes-brand diesels driving on real roads, the findings showed that they spewed out much more nitrogen oxide virtually all the time than the amount stated. He shared the test results with California regulators which will surely trigger an inquiry  by the US Environmental Protection Agency, into Daimler Benz's emission figures. He also intimated that there could also be some complicity on the part of European governments. Daimler said the lawsuit’s claims are totally without merit and that the investigation is unrelated to the VW emission scandal. The company also repeatedly denied  using emission defeat devices or manipulating emissions tests.

However Daimler AG did concede that the US Department of Justice asked the company to investigate irregularities in diesel emissions in its Mercedes brand vehicles. Now that at least two German automakers are under US scrutiny, the emissions-cheating witch-hunt could be growing exponentially. Senior Kelley Blue Book  analyst Karl Brauer said that  Mercedes Benz, Volkswagen and other automakers, and several governments have known for years that diesel cars only met with emissions standards in the lab, but not on real roads. He also added that it was so understood, even if not documented; essentially an agreement between the automakers and the European governments. Hardly had the above transpired when Germany’s transport minister announced that five automakers agreed to recall 630,000 diesel vehicles in Europe following an investigation into emissions levels. Recalls include Mercedes and Opel, as well as Volkswagen and its subsidiaries Audi and Porsche.

Earlier this year, Dutch emission tests revealed that a Mercedes C-Class BlueTec diesel emits 40 times more nitrogen oxide on road tests than in lab tests. In other tests released by the British government during this week, have shown that diesels from Daimler and other automakers, including Ford Motor Company, Nissan Motor Company and Hyundai Motor Company, perform vastly differently in lab tests than they do on the road.

Volkswagen, the German carmaker Volkswagen announced on Friday past (April 22) that the massive engine-rigging scandal it is currently engulfed in, pushed it into an annual loss, for the first for more than 20 years, but the final total costs are still incalculable.

Back in Tokyo Japan the latest fuel consumption misconduct is at play. Mitsubishi is embroiled in a fuel-consumption scandal affecting thousands of its vehicles and admitted to 'cheating' since 1991. They have been using an improper fuel-efficiency testing method for the past 25 years and have no idea how many cars are affected sold overseas that exceed the already known figure of 600 00 vehicles. Mitsubishi admitted that a group of unnamed employees rigged fuel consumption tests back in 2002 to make some of its cars seem more fuel-efficient than they actually were.
A decade ago Mitsubishi  was pulled back from the brink of bankruptcy when it was found to have covered up a series of vehicle defects. But today Mitsubishi plans on  compensating customers in a bid to limit the fallout from the scandal. Meanwhile Transport ministry authorities raided Mitsubishi's  offices earlier in April.

These embarrassing global scandals have raised questions about the Japanese and German carmakers future, but points to a broader problem in the global car industry as regulators probe other automakers' pollution and fuel-efficiency standards. While the echos of these announcements are  is still resonating in the ears of the motor industry,  Germany's transport minister Alexander Dobrindt said  Volkswagen's emissions-rigging scandal sparked a inquest and found irregularities at 16 car brands, amongst which are Mercedes, France's Renault, Alfa Romeo, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Jaguar, and Nissan.

A CALL FOR EMISSIONS TESTING OF ALL MAKES OF MOTOR VEHICLES

A CALL FOR EMISSIONS TESTING OF ALL MAKES OF MOTOR VEHICLES

By now, virtually everyone who owns a VW, Audi, Skoda or a Seat or those who don't, must  have heard about the Volkswagen AG emissions scandal. A scandal of global proportions  that rocked the entire automotive  industry and affects 11 million diesel powered vehicles as well as some 430 000 petrol powered vehicles, all of which were fitted with the now notorious "cheat device". Initially the Volkswagen management pleaded ignorance about said "cheat device" but later stepped up to the plate, admitting their liability and offering restitution to all VAG vehicle owners directly affected  by the "cheat device"

This excludes you and me and all our fellow VW group vehicle owners who have also been compromised by Volkswagen's exploits, whether it was intentional or not. I'm specifically referring to all VAG vehicle owners loosing value on the vehicles since the scandal  broke, which is still dropping steadily.  According to Volkswagen we would just have to bite the bullet, but is offering to make a once off financial cash/voucher disbursement to all VAG vehicle owners directly affected by the "cheat device". Meanwhile, Governments from several countries are up in arms about their carbon credits, and instituting litigation against Volkswagen for the shortfall on taxation paid by consumers, because of the "doctored emission values.  Scandal mongers have been heckling and spreading rumours that the emissions problem, more than likely affect all of the 127 models of cars produced by Volkswagen.

However, in my opinion, Volkswagen cannot be the only auto manufacturer that got their emissions figures to wrong, especially considering its global market share and its clout within the automotive industry. It gives the impression that someone out there is not too happy with Volkswagen for whatever reason and decided to set the wheels of blame, revenge, envy in motion. Having said that, there are rumours and allegations that other motor manufacturers used similar software  devices to cheat at emissions. However, none of them have come forward or owned up like Volkswagen did. Is it possible that the Kyoto protocol emission reduction agreements that were discussed over several years then ratified are unattainable, too presumptuous or just impossible to meet? If there is even the slightest truth in that, then all automotive manufactures would fall short of the target. Or is it that out of a class of x, Volkswagen is the only kid that failed.

Evidently his cannot be true especially considering that German engineering impress and in many cases even exceeds their own expectations.  Based on this assumption, I call for emissions testing across the entire spectrum of motor vehicles, especially American cars because they were renown as gas guzzlers and where there is fire, is obviously a lot of smoke. With COP21 just a month away, it would be in the interest of all vehicle owners to demand that their preferred manufacture submit their cars for emission testing. It would be a great injustice to Volkswagen and VAG vehicle owners if all the manufacturers are guilty and only Volkswagen gets burnt in the process. Add you opinion below if you think that all motor manufacturers emissions figures needs to be scrutenized.

All these Vehicles were emission tested

TRAPPED INSIDE VW POLO

TRAPPED INSIDE VW POLO

Believe it or not, I got locked inside my VW Polo and couldn't get out. The self lock was activated, and me pulling at the door release lever just had no effect. The locking indicator pin surfaced from hiding put retracted when I released the door lever. For the sake of clarity, let me start at the beginning.  In a previous blog, I mentioned that when my VW Polo 2.0 Highline sedan was returned from its 90 000 Km service, it came back with a stripped nut  that tightens the earth terminal of the battery. I suspected that it was the cause of intermittent loss of power steering and I was going to get round to replacing it, but I just didn't have the time. Yep, procrastination is an evil that does get the better of all of us at one time or the other.
VW Polo 9N Fuse card

Anyway, getting locked inside my VW Polo on Saturday morning gave me a scare that I immediately went and replaced the entire terminal and not just the stripped nut. The previous evening, whilst driving home from movies, the dashboard lights on my VW Polo stopped working, it kinda just went dark. So when I arrived home, I started fiddling to determine why, and I discovered that the wipers and the indicators weren't working either. Must be a fuse I thought. So I went straight to the fuse box and whipped out  the scorecard. Seconds later I identified the fuse responsible for supplying the dashboard with power (marked with yellow arrow and see the powdery substance in fuse holder, it's most probably oxidation from condensation). I got out my multimeter and checked the 5A fuse (fuse 30) and as I suspected, it was open circuit, fused, blown. Oh crap, I didn't have a spare so the following morning, off I went to the auto spare to get a replacement.  It was rather hot so I opened my window about 10 cm before I took off. As I pulled away,  the  self  lock  engaged at the very moment I realized that I didn't  take my wallet. So I stopped, reversed back about the 100 meters I drove, switched off the engine pulled out the key, pulled the door handle and it wouldn’t  open. Pulling at the door release lever just raised the locking indicator pin put retracted when I released the door lever. I then reinserted the key, turned on the ignition, pressed the unlock button on the door, heard the door unlock, opened the door, jumped out, ran inside grabbed my wallet, got back into the Polo and off I went once again.

VW Polo 9N Fuse holder

This time, I noticed that the auto lock engaged at about 40km ph. Thinking nothing of it, I arrived at the auto spares, switched off the engine, pulled out the key, pulled the door release lever and like before it wouldn't open.  And as before I reinserted the key turned on the ignition, pressed the door release yet nothing happened. I then realized that the ignition wasn’t on. So I attempted to start the engine and nothing happened. The battery terminal wasn't making contact, I came loose once again and the engine wouldn't start. By extension, there was also no power to the door electronics that operated the door. In desperation to get out, I even tried the fob remote unlock button even though I knew that without a battery connection the door electronics cannot open and neither power the motor that rolls down the electric windows. I was stuck inside. I figured if I could get my arm through the 10 cm opening, I could possibly open the door manually with the key. But the opening was too small or my arm too thick.  Now it was starting to get hot inside the Polo. My only other option was to ask a passer-by to unlock the door for me. So a few minutes later an elderly gentleman walked by, whom I alerted, and speaking through the window opening, and handing him the key   through the window opening, I asked him to unlock the door which he obligingly did.

With the door open, my mind was racing, what if the window wasn't slightly open, meaning I wouldn't have been able to pass the key to anyone to open the door. I would have been trapped inside and helpless. The escalating heat would have got the better of me. I probably would have had to kick-in the driver-door window since it's the only door that actually has a key receptacle, so that I could unlock it from the outside. This made me wonder what would happen if the battery gets damaged or destroyed in a collision and I was injured inside and not able to break the window. I know that in the event of a crash when the airbags pop, the on-board software is configured to automatically unlock the doors, but what if the supply voltage to the indicators gets shorted in a crash causing that fuse in question  also to blow. Clearly this is a hazard, and I would think a small sealed backup battery like those used for alarm systems fitted inside the cockpit under the dash or the consol would be a good idea. I think the brave among you should try to replicate this problem on your vehicles by removing the 5A fuse in question and disconnect the battery then assess whether or not this is acceptable design or a reason to get into Volkswagen's face about it. They are already going through the pressures of their emissions scandal, and it really isn't nice to kick a dog when it's down.

VOLKSWAGEN VEHICLES FITTED WITH CHEATING SOFTWARE

VEHICLES FITTED WITH VOLKSWAGEN EA 189 DIESEL ENGINE

The Volkswagen  emissions scandal, nicknamed "Dieselgate" is a controversy of global proportions, perpetrated by the largest carmaker in the world. And unless you've lived under a rock for the past three weeks, you would have heard it spoken about at breakfast diners, discussed in public transport on the way to work, lamented over by colleagues who recently bought a VAG vehicle, commented on at social gatherings and scandalized by the facebook and twitter communities.  To date Volkswagen AG admitted that 11 million vehicles manufactured between 2009 and 2015, fitted with EA189 diesel engine are affected with "cheating software".  Global pressure is forcing Volkswagen to recall all affected vehicles to remedy the problem by the end of 2016. Currently all the affected models have been withdrawn from sale and includs the 2009-2015 range of  VW Beetle 2.0L TDI,   VW Golf 2.0L TDI,   VW Jetta 2.0L TDI,  Audi A3 2.0L TDI, and  VW Passat 2.0L TDI sedan and wagon, Audi A4 sedan and wagon, Audi A5 coupe, Audi Q5 2.0 TDI SUV, VW Tiguan SUV,  the Skoda Yeti SUV and Skoda Superb sedan and wagon, all fitted with the controversial 2.0-litre EA189 TDIengine.  However, the cars are safe to drive since they don't have safety issues. These vehicles are globally distributed as per the graphic below. As can be seen approximately half a million (482,000 ) of these suspect vehicles were sold in the USA and is also the place from  where all the hoo-haa, objections, opposition, protest, criticism and law suites originated thus far, even though the USA reneged from the Kyoto protocol as long ago as 2001 whilst under the Bush administration.

Meanwhile, Peter Mock the managing director of a European non-profit clean-air organisation found discrepancies in the European tests on VW  Passat, and VW Jetta diesel vehicles. His organisation was  unsuccessful at convincing European regulators to emulate the higher and stricter U.S emissions standards for diesel automobiles. He then appealed to John German his American counterpart at the International Council on Clean Transportation to replicate the tests in the U.S., convinced that they could show Europeans it was possible for diesel cars to run clean. So in conjunction with the West Virginia University’s Center for Alternative Fuels, Engines and Emissions (CAFEE) -- contracted to the EPA-- they found emissions discrepancies between lab tests and road tests of Volkswagen Diesel vehicles fitted with the EA 189 Diesel engine.

Whistle blowers - John German (L) and Peter Mock (R)

After making their findings known to the EPA,  an investigation was opened against Volkswagen in May of 2014. The string of subsequent events just snow balled,  resulting in the forced resignation of Prof. Dr Martin Winterkorn CEO at Wolfsburg Germany. Termination of  Ulrich Hackenberg, engineer and former head  of R&D at Audi and  Wolfgang Hatz engineer and former head of R&D Porsche. Admission that Volkswagen cheated at emission testing and subsequent loss of 30 billion Euro market share in just two days of trading. Congressional hearings grilling of   Michael Horn, the CEO of VW's American division.

Volkswagen is the largest automobile manufacturer in the world with a global employee figure  of almost 600,000 people. Fines leveled at Volkswagen popping up all over the world could result in sequestration and add all these people to that already long unemployment line. But according to the new CEO Matthias Mueller while addressing more than 20 000 employees, he assured them Volkswagen will rise above the scandal. According to Michael Horn  when questioned by the House of Representatives' Energy and Commerce Committee, he said that the "cheating software" was not a corporate decision but that of a  group of rogue German software engineers.

VOLKSWAGEN EMISSIONS SCANDAL

VOLKSWAGEN  EMISSIONS SCANDAL

The "Dieselgate Scandal" was breaking news on the morning of 22 September 2015. Apparently The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the California Air Resources Board (EPA and CARB) revealed their findings that while testing some Volkswagen Group diesel vehicles, they detected deliberate manipulations that vehemently violates American environmental standards. Allegations of corruption within the VW ranks sparked global outrage when the EPA discovered that software  installed on Volkswagen AG vehicles fitted with a Volkswagen EA 189 TDI Diesel Engine, could detect when it was undergoing EPA emissions testing. The vehicle electronics would then activate its full emissions control circuitry to ensure that the vehicle passes the test with flying colours. However under normal operating conditions this software is deactivated resulting in increased exhaust emission with Nitrous Oxide (N2O) as high as 40 times more than that permitted by law. VW is facing criminal prosecution for deliberately contravening the The Clean Air Act and is subject to pay a fine of $37,500 per non-compliant vehicle. This could seriously stack up to as much as 18 billion USD even though Volkswagen AG only made a net profit of 12 billion USD in 2014. This is the greater public relations nightmare that the VW group ever faced  in their entire 78 years of growth, with repercussions that already wiped our one third of their market capital, and doing untold damage to their share price which drop down to an all time low.

The shocking thing about this story, is that a VW spokesperson admitted that a defeat device’ specifically designed to cheat EPA emission testing was installed in more than over 11 million Volkswagen AG vehicles fitted with the EA 189 engine worldwide. VW engineers further said the EA 189 engine that was developed in 2005, would never have met  emission caps within the allotted budgets without the software deception. Volkswagen immediate conducted Internal investigations and  established that the suspect engine management software was also installed in other vehicles in the Volkswagen lineup that use different diesel engines, saying that the software doesn't have any effect on the majority of these engines. According to the EPA the Volkswagen "Diesel Gate Scandal" is not not unique nor the first because several truck manufacturers including Caterpillar and Volvo were caught doing the very same thing back in  1998.

A parody of Adolf Hilter pissed with the EPA

As luck would have it, it  turns out that the cheat device was a management decision and not Volkswagen Policy. Management objectives revolved around pushing production, meeting  turnover targets and beating the competition by getting their vehicles to market soonest.  As a consequence Martin Winterkorn, CEO of Volkswagen AG Wolfsburg resigned his position on Monday the 28th September 2015. Volkswagen then suspended all their research and development R&D chiefs, heading-up its core VW brands, as well as the chiefs heading-up their luxury division Audi and its sports-car maker Porsche, with a pending dismissal of the top brand executives as it a measure to recover from the scandal. There were not axed as sacrificial lambs of scapegoats but at commitment to do right by the public. VW has subsequently issued a stop sale order on all new and pre-owned Volkswagen’s equipped with the EA 189 engine.

Volkswagen made a commitment to fixing this issue as soon as possible and released a brief saying that the topic under investigation is not safety related, but specific to the emissions output of the vehicle. Further assuring customers and owners of the affected model vehicles that they are safe to drive, and that they are speedily working towards developing a remedy that meets emissions standards and satisfies their loyal and valued customers. Saying that the owners of these vehicles need not take any action at this time but that VW will directly contact  them once a  solution is in place. But that a  specific time-frame is not available at the current point in time but will present the technical solutions and measures to relevant responsible authorities in October 2015. The official word  directly from VW is that there is no active recall on any of the 2.0L turbo-diesel 4 cylinder engine vehicles, including the:

VW Jetta (Model Years 2009 – 2015)
VW Jetta Sportwagen (Model Years 2009-2014)
