Volkswagen Polo

Volkswagen Polo

The Volkswagen Polo Vivo is undoubtedlty the most popular, as well as the  best-selling car is South Africa. Looking at the top ten vehicles sold in South Africa, VW Polo Vivo takes first place, the Volkswagen Polo takes third place and the Vw Golf takes tenth place. Looking at the frequency of problems encountered with Volkswagen vehicles  in general, it appears that the VW Polo 2002-2009 models are far more reliable than the VW Polo 2010—2016 models. These models are prone to EPC problems and several Polo owners have complained that they encountered EPC problem with their cars with as little as 700km on their clocks.

The most troublesome generation 5, VW Polo seem to be the 2011 model, but the 2012 model takes the cake for the annoying knocking sounds coming from the suspension when going over speed bumps and pot holes.  But this knocking sound isn't unique to the Polo 2011 and 2012 models, it also affects the Golf Mark 7, the Volkswagen Transporter T5 and Polo GTI, etc.

It seems that somehow the strut mount bolts in the engine bay of these Volkswagens haven't been torqued properly. The rattling and knocking noise coming from the shocks occurs when driving over pot holes  or over speed humps, especially when the shock is fully extended or when driving slow.  In some cases the noise comes from coil-over assembly. These coil-overs squeek and creak at random and sometimes the rear ones squeak worse than the front ones. We found by removing the damper adjustment knob and tightening the 17 mm nut in the middle of your strut top,  and   holding the centre with a 7 mm allen key,  the noise is  somewhat reduced but is very disconcerting since these models are relatively new cars.

Its probably best to re-torque these nut between 45-60 ft/lbs with a correctly  calibrated torque wrench. In my opinion there should have been a total recall on VW Polo 2010—2016 models for this problem.

Loss of Power

LOSS OF POWER

On Sunday past, whilst taking my family for a drive along our scenic coastline on the Western Cape, I happened to see no less than three Volkswagen cars, each being loaded onto a roll-back. A VW Polo Vivo in Muizenberg, an Audi S4 in  Fish Hoek and a VW Scirocco in Scarborough. I couldn't help but feel awkward about my own Volkswagen Polo because after all, three out of three vehicles on the roll-backs were Volkswagen manufactured cars. I would have felt loads better if at least one of them were a Toyota or a Ford or a Honda. Understandable there are a lot more Volkswagen vehicles on the road than any other make, hence the higher failure rate.

However, I instinctively pulled over for a chat with the driver of the Scirocco to inquire about the problem. It's owner Gwendaline. apparently parked her car to go for a walk on the beach and when she returned, had difficulty in starting her car. When it finally started , the whole car shook like her washing machine does in its spins cycle.  According to her, the Scirocco  is  really an excellent car with very few issues other than regular EPC light issues; and that its 18 inches tyres are a bit expensive. So we started talking about the EPC - Electronic Power Control and she seems really knowlegeable about it.  Our conversation went something like this.

Electronic Power Control

The EPC warning light, is just an indicator light powered by the Electronic Power Control circuit. Most people are under the impression that it indicates that there is something wrong with the engine when it light up. But this is not exactly the case, because the EPC light does come on when a brake light is fused or the fuel tank cap isn't properly closed.  When The EPC warning light flashes or stays on, it merely alerts the driver to a problem that may exists in your Volkswagen's throttle system. The throttle system encompasses  the throttle body, the throttle control motor, the accelerator pedal, the drive-by-wire electronics, the traction control, the cruise control, the stability control, the fuel delivery system and even the braking system and all their sensors, etc..

What does it mean when the EPC warning light turns on in a Volkswagen?

The throttle body motor opens and closes the butterfly valve located on the intake manifold which regulates the amount of air that goes into the engine, in relation to the position of the accelerator pedal. Implying the higher the air flow into the engine, the more fuel the ECU injects, thereby increasing  or decreasing the power output of the engine. When a problem is detected in the throttle system, a signal from one of the sensors triggers the  ECU into illuminating  the EPC  warning light.

The Electronic Power Control (EPC) is just a part of the Engine Management System, which in turn is part of the overall On-Board Diagnostic II system. Normally when the a problem is detected that causes the EPC light to turns on, it also sends fault codes to the dashboard module or gateway module, vehicle model dependent. These fault codes can be retrieved by an ODBII scanner / smart phone, which are key to isolating the area of the throttle system that has failed. Most EPC light and ESP light problems will limit your Volkswagen's output power, commonly known as "limp mode".

It is advisable that when either the EPC or ESP lights turn on, the problem associated with it be repaired timeously. A Volkswagen in limp mode should not be used to run errands, and since the car has sufficient power to drive it to  dealership or mechanical repair shop, it is best to do so. Normally once the fault / problem is remedied the EPC or ESP light will turn off. However, there are hundreds if not thousands of Volkswagen owners who have taken their Volkswagen cars into dealerships for repair, only to encounter the same EPC / ESP problem a day or two later.  Some of them suffer with EPC problems for months and I personally know of someone who had an EPC problem for more than a year. That's enough to drive the sanest person nuts.

________________________________________

My W Polo classic 2003 model's EPC light is on and there's no acceleration. My VW Jetta's dashboard displays the word  EPC, now it has no power. My VW Golf diplay the letters Epc, what can I do?  My VW Golf IV cluster shows both epc and esp and it won't revv up, nor go more than 70 km/h. My VW Sirocco 2017 model's epc light has come on again. My car's EPC light is on and I don't know what to do?

On-Board Diagnostics

All about On-Board Diagnostics

On-board diagnostics are here to stay and any amount of wishing will not make them go away. Virtually every  car on the road today is fitted with one. The main objective behind having on-board equipment installed in automobiles is to control and  limit the level of harmful emissions emitted by these cars. Eco friendly motoring is the new way of keep the global carbon footprint to a minimum. Every motorist is responsible for their own. So when the check engine turns on, the on-board diagnostic equipment is trying to tell you that your car is failing its emission test and that it should be repaired before its going to drive properly again.

best obd scanner - There is no such thing as the best OBD scanner. But there is the best OBD scanner for a specific brand of car. For example VCDS is the best for Volkswagen (VAG) whereas  iCarsoft i980 is better suited for Mercedes Benz and BMW Scanner v1.4.0 OBD2 / OBDII Diagnostic Interface is best for BMW. LAUNCH, VAS 5054A ODIS,  AutoBoss, TOAD, MaxiDas, etc, are multi car diagnostic systems and are more suited for workshop use than DIY. There are plenty of DIY scanners among which are Autel MaxiScan MS509, Innova 3100,  Konnwei KW820, PowerLead Cadt PL-OM580, AutoPhix OB123, Acton CP9575, and hundreds of others, any one of which would probably the best scanner for a car owner.

bluetooth obd - most likely refers to ELM 327 Bluetooth OBD2 / OBDII for Android that works pretty well with downloadable apps like OBD Auto Doctor, OBDeleven, OBD eZWay, OBD Car Tracker, OBD Fusion and OBDLink etc. This turns your cellphone or tablet a niffty diagnostic device.

car obd - refers to the on-board diagnostic system all car makers are obligated to install in vehicles manufactured after  1996 and beyond.

car obd reader - refers to an app or a hardware device that connects to a car via an interface cable or via bluetooth or WiFi

obd - is an automotive term referring to a vehicle's self-diagnostic and reporting ability.

obd adapter - is normally a cordless bluetooth enabled adaptor that plugs into the car's 16 Pin DLC much like the ELM327 does. There are severa dozen manufactures who make them, amongs which are the Ozzy Gear OBD2 Scanner Bluetooth, Hikeren OBD2 Bluetooth Module, iAutomobil OBD2 Bluetooth Module, Foseal Mini OBD Bluetooth Scanner Adapter, Panlong Bluetooth OBD2 Scan Adapter, BAFX Products 34t5 Bluetooth OBDII Scan Tool.

obd android - there several OBD android devices. Vgate Bluetooth 4.0 OBDII is a Code Reader for both IOS & Android,  Hikeren Mini Bluetooth OBD2 is another  Car Scan Tool for android and HH OBD Advanced ELM327 OBDII V1.5 is yet another android Bluetooth Diagnostic Tool.

obd bluetooth - is the bluetooth enabled version of the scanner described above which is commonly used with a cell phone / tablet apps, and can also work with a bluetooth enabled laptop.

obd bluetooth adapter - is just another term use to refer to an OBD android / bluetooth adapter or  obd bluetooth android adapter.

obd cable - is a physical interface that plugs into the car's DLC. For example, VAG-COM V409.1 OBD OBD2 USB Cable is an OBD cable and so is KKL OBD2 USB Diagnostic Cable  both used specifically for Audi, VW, SEAT and SKODA.

obd car - Any car with either and OBD-I or OBD-II system installed. There are older cars that are completely devoid of diagnostics.

obd codes -  Are On-Board Diagnostic Codes, sometimes referred to as fault codes

obd code reader - is a handheld DIY device that purely extracts data from the ECU bus but can alter the data nor write it back to the ECU.

obd connector - refers to the DLC fitted under the dashboard close to the drivers seat. It can easily be identified by its light purple colour in VW's.

obd deviceBMW motorcycle combo - OptiMATE  canbus connector is an OBD device and so are most of the adapter, cables and bluetooth connectors mentioned above.

obd diagnostics

obd reader - normally a hand held deice capable of reading OBD data from the car's ECU but not able to write back to it.

obd system - is a standardized microcontroller based system installed in cars that continually monitor its emission control systems, by using engine mounted electronic sensors and feed back from the catalytic converter

obd diagnostic interface - refers to the USB to 16 pin DLC cable, that connects between the car and the laptop computer used to interrogate the ODB system.

obd interface - as above

obd i scanner - OBD I scanners are used on pre 1996 cars. It's been succeded  by OBD II.

obd ll - sometimes called OBD eleven, but its just a play on OBD-ii in upcase Ls. There is a bluetooth android device named ODB eleven.

obd ii - Is sometimes written as OBD 2 and is the current version of automotive vehicle On-board Diagnostics introduced in 1996 which superceded OBD 1 used in cars prior to that.

obd ii scanner  - refers to any an all devices capable of interfacing with the On-Board diagnostic system of a car used to read error codes.

obd port - The connector  fitted under the dashboard or behind the ashtray inside the car where the bluetooth adapter or the OBD inerface cable plugs into.

obd scanner - can either be a handheld  hardware device or a laptop based software /software device that interfaces with  the car's DLC, capable of reading the ECU, displaying DTCs, etc, and can either be OBD1 or OBD II.

obd scan tool - see obd scanner above.

obd tester - is an OBD scanner, that can take the form of a dedicated handheld device, or a computer based scanner or cellphone or tablet based scanner.

obd tools - refers to a collection of either diagnostic software or

obd wifi - a codless device much like a bluetooth ELM 327 but that is rather WiFi enabled.

EGR ERROR CODES

EGR EXHAUST GAS RECIRCULATION

Pre OBD vehicles had no need for an EGC circuit because these older cars had large noisy engines, were relatively fast, were gas guzzlers and  were emitting noxious exhaust emissions as if nobody cared about the environment. When combustion takes place inside an engine's cylinders, nitrogen and oxygen combine to form various oxides of nitrogen; which are collectively termed NOx. NOx emissions are generated as a function of high combustion temperature, so when it was discovered that these noxious gas emissions (NOx) were partly responsible for damaging the ozone layer and contributing to global warming, the EPA recommended legislation for OBD/EOBD/OBD-II systems to be fitted into all cars built after 1996 in order to monitor exhaust emissions.

VW Engineers then came up with an EGR circuit which took different forms and configurations and were often particular to the make, model and manufacturer of the vehicle. EGR can be achieved either internally by means of valve overlap, or achieved externally by means of a  simple arrangement of pipes and a sprung loaded mechanical valve or an electronically controlled solenoid valve. Some turbo charged engines incorporate a low and high pressure exhaust Gas Recirculation system whereas some non-turbo engines only use high pressure EGR. Engines with diesel particulate filter systems tend to use a fast switching electronically actuated EGR valve, whereas a pneumatically activated EGR valve is employed by several others. Some engines used vacumm controlled EGR and some use water-cooled systems, yet all designed to supplement the traditional air/fuel ratio and spark timing circuit.

VW 2.5 TDI AXG, AHY &  ACV engine  Pressure Converters,
EGR Valve Control Solenoid, EGR Pressure Feedback Sensor
Today virtually every vehicle manufacturers employ exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) as an emissions control sub-system in their cars, which has become an integral part of OBD-II.  The OBD-II exhaust gas recirculation system monitor is responsible for determining the serviceability of the sensors, hoses, solenoids, valves and actuators that are part of the EGR system and any problem with them would most likely trigger a binary '1' in a readiness test. Readiness tests evaluate eight on-board monitors to gauge the integrity of the engine.  Having said that, On-board diagnostic monitoring predominantly applies to systems that are most likely to cause an increase in harmful exhaust emission and during roadworthy testing these systems are specifically checked to verify compliance with EPA / government regulations.

Modern day EGR circuits essentially consists of electronic components and intelligent computer circuitry capable of recirculating a precisely controlled amount of non-combustible exhaust gas back into the intake manifold. A sort of a feed-back loop if you like. The objective is to  attain  lower combustion temperatures  and obtain optimal NOx reduction at middle and high engine loads. Restated, the greater the EGR the lower the NOx. NOx is poisonous and it is in the interest of every vehicle owner to keep their carbon footprint to a bare minimum.

The components involved in the EGR circuit are, the Mass air flow rate (MAF) sensor G70, Engine Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) Sensor 1 G235, Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) Sensor 2, Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) Sensor 3 G495, Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) Sensor 4 G648, EGR Vacuum Regulator Solenoid Valve N18 / N121, Exhaust gas Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) G39, Wastegate Bypass Regulator Valve N75, Hot-film air mass meter G70, Engine  RPM sensor and the position of the EGR Potentiometer G212. EGR Cooler Switch-Over Valve N345, which are all vehicle dependent. These transducers  assists the Engine Control Module to recognizes the position of the spring loaded valve plate so that it can adjusts the actuator (electric controlled motor) that in turn controls the gas return flow so that it can  mix with a portion of  fresh air entering at the intake manifold. This lowers the internal combustion temperature and reduces the formation of oxides of nitrogen and keep it well within the legal limit.

However, when this doesn't happen, Engine performance is un-noticeably lower, causing the Glow Plug Indicator Light to flash  continuously  in the case of diesel powered vehicles and the Engine management light in the case of gasoline powered vehicles. Meanwhile the ECU will also register a DTC in its non-volatile fault memory. In the event of a EGR malfuntion which wound't normally be noticed by  the driver if it wasn't for the instrument cluster light that flashes or stays on, don't just start replacing components. First and foremost clean out any carbon buildup with Wynnes EGR 3 cleaner, then check the sensor harness and their respective connectors and check solenoids for continuity.

The likeness of the EGR valve can be compared to the throttle valve, both are butterfly plates that are electronically controlled by the ECU causing them to open and close dependent on the calculated duty cycle of the generated drive pulse. The wider the throttle opens the higher the engine will rev, likewise the wider the EGR valve opens the better the engine performs and the less NOx it produces.

EGR ERROR CODES

Error codes staring at P0400 - P0409 ranges from malfunction of N18 (EGR Valve) to low/high signals from G98 (EGR Temperature sensor) to spurious signals from G212 (potentiometer)

Error codes staring at P1400 - P1408 ranges from Electrical Malfunction, to   Short to Ground/ Positive, too low or high

Error codes  P042E &  P042F dictates that the Exhaust Gas Recirculation "A" Control valve is, Stuck Open and stuck Closed respectively.

Error codes   P045E & P045F dictates that the Exhaust Gas Recirculation "B" Control valve is, Stuck Open and stuck Closed respectively. ts fairly pevalent on VW Jetta.

Error codes P2BAB & P2BAC dictates on incorrect EGR Flow, that NOx levels have exceeded and that the EGR has been deactivated.  Its fairly prevalent on the VW Crafter.

Once your problem is solved, it is imperative that you put  your VW, Audi, Skoda or Seat  vehicle, through a drive cycle but remember the drive cycle is manufacturer specific and should be executed accordingly.

VAG 405 SCAN TOOL

VAG405 SCAN TOOL

A week ago I  ordered a VAG405 scan tool from an online store. This scan tool is essentially a dedicated stand-alone OEM level diagnostic device for scanning Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda, Seat, VW Golf, VW GTI , VW Polo, VW Jetta, VW Beetle, VW Passat, VW Touareg, vehicles... etc. Restated, it's a scan tool specific to VAG vehicles manufactured since 1990 to the current day, yet it is quite unlike the Autel D900 diagnostic scan tool I evaluated in a previous blog which is not VAG specific but can scan several makes of vehicles.

As can be seen, it can scan Golf 3, Golf 4 Beetle, New Beetle, Passat.....

It also scans the Polo, Sharan, Lupo, Bora and the Transporter, etc...

However, when the scan tool arrived, I expected something much smaller, like perhaps the size of a Samsung S7, but to my surprise it was actually quite substantial, sporting a large easy to read backlit LCD with OBD/EOBD functionality. The box also included a nylon carry case, an OBD2 cable, a USB cable and a VAG405 user's manual.

Initially, I was intrigued by the general claims made by the advert and reiterated on  the actual box it which it was packaged. It stated that  the VAG405 scan tool reads most electronic controlled modules and erases Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) from the ECU's non-volatile memory triggered by the Engine, Transmission, ABS, Airbags, Climatic control (AC), Steering wheel, Immobilizer, Instrument cluster and Central electronics, etc. That it reads and clears generic trouble codes on VAG vehicles using either ISO 9141-2 ("CARB"), or ISO 1430 ("KWP-2000") and ISO-15765 ("CAN") protocols for the latest cars and can even resets the MIL light, airbag, ABS and a host of other  OBDII systems.

ISO 1941 Protocol
KWP2000 Protocol
CAN Bus Protocol
And that it can also resets oil service light and retrieve the ECU embedded VIN (Vehicle Information Number) as well as display I/M readiness.

All of this just sounded too good to be true so I just had to get one. But after running tests I am sorry to say that I am not too impressed with it. Not because it is brick but that it is rather inclined towards cars built prior to y2k.  I found that the VAG405 timed-out and froze when scanning for trouble codes, while displaying "Please Wait" on its LCD screen. In order to reset it, I had to physically unplug the 16 pin DLC then reconnect, else I was going to wait forever.  I assume the "Please Wait" (timeout) is an incompatibility between the non-volitile memory used in my 2007 VW Polo 2.0L Highline and that used in VW prior to y2k. However, most of the other functions appear to be compatible.

I like the fact that it is powered from the car's battery via the DLC and therefore doesn't need batteries but a nice to have would have at least been an on-off switch fitted to the scan tool, to reset the scan tool when it freezes. The software is fairly simplistic and easy to use, though rather limited since it doesn't allow you to change module coding. I couldn't retrieve my car's embedded VIN and I don't think this VAG405 can't retrieve it from  any later model VAG vehicle. It is a very nifty scan tool and great value for money if you own an older VW vehicle or Audi but steer clear of it if your car is newer that year 2000. Perhaps this peculiarity is specific to my scan tool yet everything else seem to function as per claim in the advert and on the box.

Below is a series of photographs that I uploaded to demonstrate the functionality of this scan tool.

Failed communication occurred several times but after unplugging DLC and
reinserting comms appeared to be much better.

The software is quite informative, guiding you to causes of comms errors.
Link Error! This happened when I scanned the Steering Control Module and the Radio Control Module, both of which was present and responded to the Autel D900 scan tool.

OBD readiness tests of the 8 monitors, 6 of which are feature in the above image and
2 are featured in the image below, all of which pass,

The first 6 Control Modules, A peculiarity I picked up is that the Airbags is listed before ABS which
isn't normal compared to other dedicated scan tools and computerized scan tool software.

Control Modules 16 -25

Control modules 35 -56

I don't believe that there are no stored codes because I know there are airbag error codes stores which I determined using VCDS. Like I mentioned earlier, the VAG405 is more suited to vehicles manufactured prior to y2k.

AUTEL D900 CONTINUED

AUTEL 900

This blog is a continuation of a previous blog named AUTEL D900 SCAN TOOL in which I outlined its indispensability and necessary tool to repair any VAG vehicle. Anyway, I hooked up the D900 2015 version to my polo classic 2.0l highline. As can be seen below, its software is already at version 15.7 and dated July 2015 meaning that it's a huge improvement compared to the 2011 model. There are 30 vehicle manufacturers  listed in the Autel 900 menu, the 28th of which is Volkswagen and the last selection is other, meaning any vehicle not listed. I did a DTC scan but there was none stored in memory. Neither was there any vehicle information nor freeze frame data. Compared to VCDS the live data is accurate. I was interested to see the coolant temperature increase while the car idled and that's exactly what I saw.

The OBD2 monitors are abbreviated and I dropped in a list for ease of identification below. Unfortunately I can't demonstrate the DTC feature since there were not DTCs to display. I verified with my VCDS to make sure that the D900 isn't saying that there isn't any while there may be some.
Abreviations o the various OBD2 monitors.

In my opinion the D900 is good value for money. Initially  I was sceptical that it didn't support Polo but it clearly does. It supports Audi and Porsche but doesn't specifically list Skoda nor Seat.  It may read then under other but I will have to check this and this post later. A list of VAG cars that it supports can be seen here.

D900 supports Volkswagen and Audi
D900 has 7 functions, 6 of which can be seen here
