VW Beginings

VW's humble beginings

Volkswagen, derived from the German words "Folk's Wagon" or "People's Wagon," traces its roots back to 1937 when it was founded as a pivotal player in the automotive industry. Over the decades, it has grown into the largest car manufacturer globally, boasting an extensive lineup of vehicles. One of its most iconic creations is the Volkswagen Beetle, which has left an indelible mark on automotive history.

VW Beetle 1937
VW Beetle 1937

Commissioned by Adolf Hitler, the leader of Nazi Germany, the Volkswagen Beetle was conceptualized and designed by Ferdinand Porsche, the renowned Austrian-German automotive engineer and founder of the Porsche car company.

The Beetle first rolled off the production lines in Germany in 1937 and remained in production until the late 1970s. However, its legacy endured, with production continuing at Volkswagen's Puebla facility in Mexico until 2003. In total, over 21 million Beetles were manufactured, earning it the affectionate moniker of the "poor man's Porsche."

The Beetle's success paved the way for other Volkswagen models, including the Type 2, famously known as the VW 'Bus' or Microbus, and the stylish Karmann Ghia. Subsequent iterations, such as the Type 3 'Ponton' and the Type 4 411/412 family car, further solidified Volkswagen's reputation for innovation and versatility in the automotive market.

Despite its iconic status, Volkswagen eventually ceased production of the Beetle, citing feasibility concerns in an increasingly competitive market. As other car manufacturers introduced similar-sized four-door vehicles, the Beetle, Karmann Ghia, and 'Ponton,' all two-door models, faced challenges in meeting the evolving needs of consumers, particularly in the taxi industry. The practicality of four-door vehicles for passenger transportation outweighed the convenience of two-door models, leading to a shift in consumer preferences.

This transition marked a pivotal moment in Volkswagen's history, reflecting the company's adaptability to changing market dynamics while staying true to its commitment to innovation and excellence in automotive engineering. While the Beetle era may have drawn to a close, its legacy lives on, serving as a testament to Volkswagen's enduring impact on the automotive landscape.

The New Beetle was manufactured from 1998–2011 which included  a 2-door coupé/ convertible but wasn’t  a replacement for the original Beetle,  the VW golf and VW Passat was.  The original Beetle, the VW Golf  and the VW Passat were the three top VW cars in the history of the automaker, all three of which stood out for its simplicity, affordability and quality for more than thirty years.  The Volkswagen Beetle  is a two-door economy car, intended for five occupants  and sported an air-cooled rear mounted engine.

What does it mean if the EPC warning light comes on in a Volkswagen?

What does it mean if the EPC warning light comes on in a Volkswagen?

Since the inception of the motor vehicle, several manufactures have claimed that their brand of car, has sold the most units globally. But since there is no definitive comparative yardstick to measure the exact amount of units sold,  Volkswagen claimed that their Volkswagen Beetle is the "bestselling car in history", considering they had sold more than 21 million units. To be more exact, The New York Times, date July 31, 2003 stated that the very "Last Volkswagen Beetle" manufactured was in fact number 21,529,464.

Ford on the other hand manufactured their 1 millionth Model T's during the last month of 1915, with total sales of 15 million units produced by 1927 when they ceased production. In 1972 Volkswagen broke Ford's record when their 15,007,034th Beetle came off the production line in Puebla, Mexico.

Be that as it may, Toyota boasts that in reality, their Toyota Corolla is the "bestselling automobile in the world", after reaching their 40 millionth unit in July 2013. But regardless of their claim, Volkswagen is undoubtedly still the "bestselling automobile in the world" seeing that the Volkswagen Beetle didn't change its shape or form since 1945 up to and including 2003, whereas Toyota used their Corolla label for eleven generations of Toyota cars, built since 1966 and this very Corolla label is still in common use. Non-the-less, statistically Volkswagen has been the best selling car globally until late 1998; meaning the Volkswagen Beetle remains the "bestselling vehicle ever".

Enter the Volkswagen Kombi, Volkwagen City Golf, Volkswagen Fox, Vokswagen Jetta, Volkswagen Golf, Volkswagen Polo, Volkswagen Passat, Volkswagen Kombi, Volkswagen Sharan, Volkswagen  Toureg, Volkswagen Amrok, Volkswagen Transporter and the list goes on. However this entire Volkswagen fleet doesn't come without their fair share of  problems. The most common of which is probably the EPC light accompanied by limp-mode home.

What is the VW EPC Warning Light,

The Electronic Power Control warning light, is commonly known as the EPC warning light. It's a dashboard warning indicator that suggests that there may be a problem with your Volkswagen’s throttle system. The throttle system consists of the accelerator pedal, the throttle body, traction control, cruise control, and the ECU, which is collectively called the drive-by-wire system.
The drive-by-wire system is also sometimes referred to as an Electronic Throttle Control (ETC), roughly described as a technology that electronically "connects" the accelerator pedal to the throttle, instead of a mechanical linkage.

In a drive-by-wire system, an electric stepper motor determines the angle of the throttle valve. How wide it opens or closes, is calculated by a —closed-loop control algorithm— software controlled embedded system built into the ECU. The ECU makes decisions based on various input data from several sensors, among which are, the accelerator pedal position sensors, engine speed sensor,  vehicle speed sensor, and the cruise control switch. The Electronic Control Unit (ECU) can also be described as a computerized ignition / engine management system  that operates in conjunction with the stability and cruise control systems. When the EPC light comes on, it means the problem is not emission related, whereas the Check Engine L
ight (CEL)indicates emission related problems but when it lights up, can be accompanied by the EPC light. If the EPC warning light comes on in your vehicle, it is important to have it seen to as soon as possible, because it you don't invariable it's going to trigger again when you least expect it.

EPC Car Warning Light

When the EPC light comes on in your Volkswagen, its throttle may be limited in power, yet have sufficient power to drive the car to a dealership or mechanical workshop, but it shouldn't be driven elsewhere. This is called limp-mode-home. Limp mode home is  inherent in its the software design in order to to protect the car from run-away and  its passengers from possible injury. Volkswagen cars equipped with a Electronic Stability Program (ESP) program, will display its ESP light instead of the EPC light and may automatically trigger the car into limp-home mode.

Vehicles fitted with Traction Power System (TPS) are also prone to enter into 'limp-home-mode'  which effectively prevents software glitches from initiating or activating unintended acceleration.  In 2011 the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) commissioned a team of NASA software engineers to evaluate software of late model year Toyota and Lexus vehicles, alleged to be the cause of  unintended acceleration collision, which caused the death of a passenger in a September 2007.

VOLKSWAGEN e-GOLF

IS IT TIME TO DITCH VOLKSWAGEN?

The year 2016 is fast coming to and end but will always be remembered as the year that Volkswagen AG  needed to reverse public perception over the diesel gate scandal that affected some 11 Million vehicles globally during 2015. With it's hands full with public apologies, court battles, falling share prices, Diesel vehicle recalls and general damage control caused by the negative impact to their brand after admitting  that they circumvented emissions standards; VW have been somewhat curtailed from their key business of manufacturing cars.

With the uncertainty regarding the future of diesel, especially considering that the mayors of Paris, Madrid, Athens and Mexico City pledged to ban all diesel cars by 2025. And with the ever looming legislative imperative to cut down on carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and other harmful gases, automotive manufacturers as a whole have started to seriously invest in electric-powered-car technology.

Volkswagen produced the Volkswagen e-Golf hatchback which is however not a purposely built electric car but rather shares the powertrain hardware of the Golf MK7 MQB (Modularer Querbaukasten) Typ 5G, but  fitted with an electric motor in place of its petrol/ diesel powered engine. The e-Golf is in direct competition with other purpose  built electric cars from  several manufacturer's vehicles, like the Renault ZOE hatchback, Hyundai Ioniq Electric, Tesla Model S hatchback, Tesla Model X SUV, BMW i3 hatchback, Nissan Leaf hatchback and the Kia Soul hatchback. Be that as it may, VW has sold more than 25 000 units worldwide since 2014. The VW e-Golf matches the competition in range, but the the battery management doesn't have an  active cooling system which seriously affects longevity. VW hasn't in anyway been innovative nor produced anything new. Their VW e-Golf doesn't offer anything more than the competition already does and certainly amounts to less bang for your buck. Apparently the Renault ZOE hatchback seems to be the pure electric vehicle that's leading the EV race in virtually all categories.

However, VW has always been promoting “Clean Diesel” as an alternative to hybrid and electric vehicles, thus pushing their 2009–2015 Volkswagen Jetta 2.0L TDI, 2010–2015 Volkswagen Golf 2.0L TDI, 2010–2015 Audi A3 2.0L TDI, 2012–2015 Volkswagen Beetle 2.0L TDI, 2012–2015 Volkswagen Passat 2.0L TDI,  etc, globally. It has now come to light that not only has Volkswagen cheated on emission testing with the 2.0L TDI engines, but also on the 3.0L  fitted in the 2009–2015 Audi Q7 3.0L V-6 TDI, 2009–2016 Volkswagen Touareg 3.0L V-6 TDI, 2013–2016 Porsche Cayenne Diesel 3.0L V-6.

Volkswagen had hardly settled to pay $14.7 billion and announced a buyback schedule, thinking  it was putting an end to the Dieselgate scandal when the German weekly newspaper 'Bild am Sonntag' and the 'Wall Street Journal', citing unnamed sources reporting that the California Air Resources Board (CARB) have found new Emissions-Cheat Device / emissions-lowering software on an Audi. Test results  revealed that the Audi was emitting less carbon dioxide than it did during normal use, but when the steering wheel is turned more than 15 degrees, this program would shut off, detecting that the test had completed. The Wall Street Journal alleges that Audi management specifically detailed the defeats during their meetings.

This affects all VW owners and by the looks of things, other car manufacturers have surpassed Volkswagen in several categories. Looking at comparisons in Overall, Reliability, Build Quality, Running Cost, Performance, Road Handling, Ride Quality, Ease of driving, Seat Comfort, Practicality, Car Tech, Volkswagen is either doing very badly or in some cases doesn't feature at all. Volkswagen was lying in 10th position on the top 10 selling cars globally but has subsequently been  surpassed by Tesla Motor Company, that is a new entry into the car market or rather the EV market.

Fortunately for VW, its subsidiary Audi is still in the race even though it lost 6% in sales compared to the previous year as can be seen on the "Cars Top 10" slide.  Porsche  is also in the running but there doesn't seem to be stats available as yet. Looking at the three stats sheets above, it can be clearly seen the VW lies 19th for Build Quality, 19th for Running Cost, 16th for Ride Quality but for Overall  and Reliability it doesn't even feature. What were we thinking when be bought into Volkswagen? I am seriously thinking of turning my VW Polo into an EV, then I won't have any more engine problems, especially not issues associated with that pesky EPC light and Limp mode home.

VW LOGIN CODES

VW LOGIN CODES

The "login" codes listed below work on many of the following Volkswagen vehicles listed in alphabetically. In order to use them you need a scan tool with the appropriate data connector plugged into your car's DLC connector.  VCDS software and its dual-K+CAN cable is probably your best option but is fairly expensive compared to the other ranges of DIY scan tools.  NB! Use these codes below at your own risk. If you don't have the necessary knowledge or expertise to make adaptation changes to your car's internal electronic module then it's best to leave them alone and refer these changes or logins to an automotive  professional, or at least someone knowledgeable about OBDII Diagnostic Trouble codes (DTC), vehicle  modules, intelligent sensors, the binary system, electronics and data link protocol transmission. These are extremely helpful if you've bee having one heck of a time trying to "login" to your instrument cluster to adapt some keys. Used incorrectly could turn your ECU into a brick so practice caution.

NO PROBLEM FOUND

NO PROBLEM FOUND

Have you ever taken your under warranty car to your service agent after experiencing extreme EPC Light and Engine Light activity, only to be told "No problem found"? Does the inside of your under 75,000km  car sound like an aviary when you turn-on it's fan? Or, do you constantly have to top-up your oil level between oil changes or at least every 1500 km? How do you handle it, when you go to the agents, to complain about excessive oil consumption, only to be  told that, “all cars use oil and oil consumption is a normal part of a car’s operation, beside oil consumption issues were disclosed in the vehicle owner’s manual". Has your car behaved like a washing machine during a rinse and spin cycle while driving on the freeway, misfiring, shaking and scaring the living day light out of you? If yes to any of the above, then you must be driving a VAG Car - VW, Skoda, Audi or Seat. Yes, when those injector coils go faulty in mid travel, it really frightens you because the car feels like is going to fall apart any moment.

This also happens to VW, Jetta, VW Caddy, Volkswagen Jetta, Volkswagen Golf, Volkswagen Beetle, Volkswagen Passat, Volkswagen Touareg, Porsche Cayenne, Volkswagen Amarok, Volkswagen Caddy, Volkswagen CC,  Volkswagen Fox, Volkswagen Gol G5,   Volkswagen Golf Mk6,  Volkswagen Jetta, Volkswagen Scirocco,  Volkswagen Sharan, Volkswagen Tiguan, Volkswagen Touareg,   Volkswagen Touran, Audi A3, Audi A6, Audi A7, Audi A8, Audi Q5, Audi Q7, Volkswagen Phaeton, Volkswagen Polo, Volkswagen  Lupo and Volkswagen Passat.

I've experienced the radiator fan blades disintegrate while driving, and the unbalanced rotation caused the same, exact, identical, engine shake. Then I've also experienced starting difficulties, irregular idling, poor fuel economy, hesitant acceleration, engine misfires and engine stalls. Not to mention the the constant, "in your face" red engine  warning light. All of which turned out to be components of the charge air path, especially the Mass Airflow Sensor (MAF).

When the "No problem Found" response became unbearable, it was time for self discovery. So what I've come to realize is that a mass air flow sensor, is integral part of every modern VAG engine and is normally situated somewhere inside the intake air duct, between the air filter and the engine.

I've owned several cars, amongst which were Renault, Opel, Mercedes Benz and Mazda yet never ever had the need to replace a MAF even after several years. However with VW, it needs to be cleaned or replaced regularly every 2-3 years. Cleaning a MAF is cheaper than replacing it though replacing a MAF sensor is just easier. It is DIY job because the MAF replacement cost at a VW dealers averages about R1500,00.

MASS AIRFLOW SENSOR

VAG engines require a "perfect blend" of air and fuel for absolute combustion. This "perfect blend" is known as stoichiometric or Lambda = 1, which essentially means "the mixture is right" in mechanical jargon. The vacumn caused by the turbo blower and the pistons down-ward travel creates air charge. The main aim of the charge air path is to provide a smooth increase in torque, and to deliver high efficiency throughout its  operating ranges. This air charge is measured by the MAF, so by implication a  properly functioning MAF is absolutely crucial to a smooth ride. But in modern Engine Management Systems their are several components that contribute to maintaining this "perfect blend" among which are:-

1) The Electronic throttle control (EPC)
2) Charge air pressure sensor G31
3) Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor G70
4) Barometric Pressure (BARO) sensor F96
5) Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor G42 / G299

So any fault in the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor G70 will trigger the EPC light, because the Motronic engine control unit (ECU)  uses it as an engine load signal and as a reference data to calculate the  signal plausibility of other sensor inputs, when and how much fuel to deliver, and when to generate a spark for the relieve cylinder. At the same time, it will also trigger a DTC in memory. The MAF also works in conjunction with an O2 sensor that provides a “closed-loop” feedback  known as short term fuel trim (STFT) / Long term fuel trim (LTFT), in order to make corrections to that predicted air mass. If the air filter isn't replaced on a regular basis, a build- up of impurities in the MAF will cause it to start failing when it gets too dirty to do its job and trigger the EPC light.

VOLKSWAGEN EMISSIONS SCANDAL

VOLKSWAGEN  EMISSIONS SCANDAL

The "Dieselgate Scandal" was breaking news on the morning of 22 September 2015. Apparently The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the California Air Resources Board (EPA and CARB) revealed their findings that while testing some Volkswagen Group diesel vehicles, they detected deliberate manipulations that vehemently violates American environmental standards. Allegations of corruption within the VW ranks sparked global outrage when the EPA discovered that software  installed on Volkswagen AG vehicles fitted with a Volkswagen EA 189 TDI Diesel Engine, could detect when it was undergoing EPA emissions testing. The vehicle electronics would then activate its full emissions control circuitry to ensure that the vehicle passes the test with flying colours. However under normal operating conditions this software is deactivated resulting in increased exhaust emission with Nitrous Oxide (N2O) as high as 40 times more than that permitted by law. VW is facing criminal prosecution for deliberately contravening the The Clean Air Act and is subject to pay a fine of $37,500 per non-compliant vehicle. This could seriously stack up to as much as 18 billion USD even though Volkswagen AG only made a net profit of 12 billion USD in 2014. This is the greater public relations nightmare that the VW group ever faced  in their entire 78 years of growth, with repercussions that already wiped our one third of their market capital, and doing untold damage to their share price which drop down to an all time low.

The shocking thing about this story, is that a VW spokesperson admitted that a defeat device’ specifically designed to cheat EPA emission testing was installed in more than over 11 million Volkswagen AG vehicles fitted with the EA 189 engine worldwide. VW engineers further said the EA 189 engine that was developed in 2005, would never have met  emission caps within the allotted budgets without the software deception. Volkswagen immediate conducted Internal investigations and  established that the suspect engine management software was also installed in other vehicles in the Volkswagen lineup that use different diesel engines, saying that the software doesn't have any effect on the majority of these engines. According to the EPA the Volkswagen "Diesel Gate Scandal" is not not unique nor the first because several truck manufacturers including Caterpillar and Volvo were caught doing the very same thing back in  1998.

A parody of Adolf Hilter pissed with the EPA

As luck would have it, it  turns out that the cheat device was a management decision and not Volkswagen Policy. Management objectives revolved around pushing production, meeting  turnover targets and beating the competition by getting their vehicles to market soonest.  As a consequence Martin Winterkorn, CEO of Volkswagen AG Wolfsburg resigned his position on Monday the 28th September 2015. Volkswagen then suspended all their research and development R&D chiefs, heading-up its core VW brands, as well as the chiefs heading-up their luxury division Audi and its sports-car maker Porsche, with a pending dismissal of the top brand executives as it a measure to recover from the scandal. There were not axed as sacrificial lambs of scapegoats but at commitment to do right by the public. VW has subsequently issued a stop sale order on all new and pre-owned Volkswagen’s equipped with the EA 189 engine.

Volkswagen made a commitment to fixing this issue as soon as possible and released a brief saying that the topic under investigation is not safety related, but specific to the emissions output of the vehicle. Further assuring customers and owners of the affected model vehicles that they are safe to drive, and that they are speedily working towards developing a remedy that meets emissions standards and satisfies their loyal and valued customers. Saying that the owners of these vehicles need not take any action at this time but that VW will directly contact  them once a  solution is in place. But that a  specific time-frame is not available at the current point in time but will present the technical solutions and measures to relevant responsible authorities in October 2015. The official word  directly from VW is that there is no active recall on any of the 2.0L turbo-diesel 4 cylinder engine vehicles, including the:

VW Jetta (Model Years 2009 – 2015)
VW Jetta Sportwagen (Model Years 2009-2014)
VW Golf (Model Years 2010-2015)
VW Golf Sportwagen (Model Year 2015)
VW Beetle and VW Beetle Convertible (Model Years 2012 – 2015)
VW Passat (Model Years 2012-2015)

Vehicles in the UK affected per brand are as follows:
VW Passenger Cars – 508,276
VW Commercial Vehicles – 79,838
AUDI – 393,450
ŠKODA – 131,569
SEAT – 76,773

The Spanish automobile manufacturer SEAT, owned by the Volkswagen group, fitted 700,000 vehicles with pollution cheating software to dupe emissions tests. As part of its global response to the damaging pollution-cheating scandal, Volkswagen plans to recall as many as 120,000 diesel cars sold in South Korea,

Meanwhile Volkswagen AG and has setup websites for all Volkswagen Group brands so that VW, Audi, Skoda and SEAT vehicle owners may self-verify if their vehicles are affected. To check if your VW,Audi, Skoda and SEAT is affected, visit one of these address below:-

VOLKSWAGEN'S EXISTENCE THREATENING CRISES

Volkswagen's Knock-on / Snowball effect

During September of 2015 Volkswagen AG admitted that they created sophisticated software that could  determined when the cars in which it was installed were tested by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) thus able to turn on the pollution controls but once all wheels were in rotation and the steering wheel was turned, the cheat software turned off. The cars implicated in Volkswagen's emissions scandal include the VW Jetta TDI, the VW Beetle, VW Golf  Model 2009-2015 TDI's, the Audi A3 and the Passat 2014- 015 model .

Apparently Volkswagen cheated at emissions tests for seven years before being caught by the International Council on Clean Transportation. With the result that all sales of affected VW cars were stopped. In a the inquests that followed Volkswagen was found guilty and liable to compensate all the car owners who were cheated.

The owners of the 482,000 Volkswagen 2-liter diesel vehicles implicated in the company's emissions scandal  could each get as much as $7,000 because the automaker is willing to shell out over $10 billion in a civil settlement to U.S. car owners, in order to make things right. The automaker is expected to award each of these  car owners between $1,000 and $7,000 and will attempt to repair as many of the automobiles as it can, at no cost to the consumers.

European are also shouting compensation and Europe's Industry Commissioner Elzbieta Bienkowska  says it would be biased and very unfair of  Volkswagen to treat European customers  differently  because of different legal system, and that Volkswagen (VOW) should monetarily   compensate European customers same compensation as US drivers. And she added "Treating consumers in Europe differently than U.S. consumers is no way to win back trust,"  However  VW officials in Europe said that they will repair vehicles and remove illegal software, but have no intention to pay consumers compensation, arguing they suffered no loss.

As Volkswagen prepares to spend $10.2 billion to buy back vehicles in the U.S. a South Korean Volkswagen executive has been arrested after a warrant was issued by the Seoul District Court for charges related to Volkswagen's emissions cheating. Claiming the executive should have submitted test results for new cars but tried to fool the system by submitting test results for previous models. In what could mean even more trouble for  Volkswagen, the VW executive told prosecutors he altered the software for the electronic control units based on direct orders from Volkswagen management. Volkswagen Korea is facing class-action lawsuits from Korean owners who are demanding compensation similar to what has been offered to owners in the U.S.

From this it is clear that the Snowball effect will soon go global and evey country will jump on the band wagon in order to get a piece of Volkswagen. The million dollar question is, " Will Volkswagen survive a 80 billion USD "existence -threatening  crises.

VW/AUDI ENGINE/ RADIATOR COOLING FAN CONTROL MODULE

VW/AUDI ENGINE/ RADIATOR COOLING FAN & CONTROL MODULE

The radiator is an integral part of each and every VW, Audi, Skoda and Seat vehicle. Its main objective is to keep the engine oil cool which in turn keeps all the moving parts of the engine cool. Most cars have a radiator fan with a separate fan for the air conditioner however, VAG vehicles have an integrated Radiator and Condenser Fan Assembly,  as can be seen in the image below. Be that as it may, it is not a one size fits all situation. Virtually every VW, Audi, Seat and Skoda vehicle category has a slightly different fan which is very evident when looking at the different three character alphanumeric prefix and the alpha suffix in their part numbers. View the list below to see what I mean.
Radiator and Condenser Fan Assembly.  The fan on the right is 360mm in diameter
with a 4-pin main connector rated at 300W.
The fan on the left is 295mm  with a 2-pin
female connector, and rated at 200W.
The flip side of the Radiator and Condenser Fan Assembly

Be aware that a VW Polo 9N and 6R have different fans, an Audi A3 and a Q7 have different fans, a Skoda Fabia and a Roomster have different fans, a Seat Ibiza and a Seat Leon have different fans and the same and the same goes for Passat, Golf, Beetle, Tiguan, Touran, Fox, Transporter, Jetta, etc...  Having said all that, suffice to say that all these fans are troublesome, they burn out, the fins disingrates, they go open circuit and I've even known a few to go short circuit and blow its 30 amp fuse.

This list is by no means complete and there are probably a few dozen more variations. These fans are made  by Brose
(Puebla/Mexico),   Behr Hella Services GmbH (Germany), Wenzhou (Mainland China) and several other an OE manufacturer expressly for the Volkswagen Group with OEM replacement part numbers 1K0959455DT, 1K0959455CQ, 1K0959455N, 1K0959455DL, 1K0959455FE, 1K0959455FJ, etc.  These are predominantly the 300W, 4-pin main connector with 2-pin female secondary connector type, guaranteed to fit the following VW and Audi models.

2006-2013 Audi A3
2008-2015 Audi TT
2009-2015 Audi TTS
2012-2014 Audi TTRS
2012-2012 Volkswagen Beetle (up to 3/4/2012, VIN specific)

2007-2015 Volkswagen EOS
2006-2014 Volkswagen GTI
2010-2014 Volkswagen Golf
2005-2012 Volkswagen Jetta (up to 3/4/2012, VIN specific)

2006-2009 Volkswagen Rabbit
2009-2015 Volkswagen Tiguan

The 360mm Radiator fan, notice the four wires in the plug, two thick and two thin.

However, in order to avoid future problems, it is highly recommenced by the fan manufactures that the controller module should be replaced together with correct fan.  The list below are just a few of the radiator controller modules / relays that support the glut of VAG fans. These relays are  VIN specific, so please verify existing part number with the supplied part for correctness.  These contollers are manufactured in Hungary,  Brazil, and Germany.

4 and 14 Pin radiator controller module

4 and 10 pin radiator controller module

As mentioned earlier, the fans and controllers are troublesome but the German manufactured version is a lot better and thus last much longer but it is also pricier.  Notice that the main part number on both the above images are the same except for its prefix. The real difference is that the top module has 14 contacts on its right side connector whereas the middle module has only 10 and the bottom module has only 6.  The 2 images below gives you  good idea of the variations in modules. The final image shows how these modules burn.

Main and secondary connectors with 4 and 10 pins respectively.
The secondary plug has 14 pins

This is what happens to the modules made in Hungary and Brazil.

AUTEL D900 SCAN TOOL

AUTEL D900 SCAN TOOL

The modern day car in its current incarnation has increasingly become more and more electrotechnical than mechanical and technological advancements are constantly on the incline.  It is therefore  quite appropriate to say that vehicle owners need to become electromechanical savvy. In my opinion, the way forward is to invest in a scan tool for your particular make and model car. Since most people are familiar with Cell Phones, Decoders, Set Top Boxes, PVR, DVR and Televisions with various menus, or computers, access points and routers  with various wizards, navigating a scan tool would be relatively easy. A scan tool is an indispensable device for modern car diagnostics and is a technological marvel that's going to save you time and money, but only if you are willing to embrace the technology.

In a previous blog I discussed VCDS which I think is a really fantastic piece of software with its hardware interface combination specific to VAG vehicles. The amount of Onboard information that is accessible with VCDS is astounding and it is literally beter than the factory  VAS Scan Tool used by VW /AUDI /SKODA / SEAT agents. In fact, in some cases VCDS  will even retrieve more faults than the VAS tools.  Be that as it may, as fantastic as VCDS is, it has major shortcomings for vehicle owners in general. Since VCDS is VAG specific, all other vehicle owners are at a loss to its technical capabilities and would have to look at other scan tools from  companies like  Auto Boss, Launch X431, Autel Maxidas DS708, Pro-Link iQ,  Mentor Touch ET6500, OTC Pegisys, Craftsman - 20899, G-Scan Oceania, Bosch 3824, etc, who produce commercial multivehicle scan tools. These companies cater for the automotive service industry since their scan tools are quite pricey and far beyond the budget of the average car owner.  If VCDS was multivehicle, it would be as good if not better than most commercial scan tools. However, since this is not the case,  Autel has come to their aid of the average car owner. Autel has a low cost handheld scan tool that is multivehicle compatible that supports the following list of vehicles.

Acura, Audi, BMW, Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Daewoo, Dodge, Eagle, Ford, Geo, GMC, Honda, Hummer, Hyundai, Infiniti, Isuzu, Jaguar, Jeep, Kia, Land Rover, Lexus, Lincoln, Mazda, Mercedes Benz, Mercury, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, Porsche, Plymouth, Saab, Saturn, Scion, Suzuki, Toyota, Volkswagen, Volvo.

I acquired the 2015 version because of its versatility because it supports several models of each of the above mentioned vehicles. I wanted it to diagnose my Renault but discovered that it unfortunately does't support Renault and even more surprisingly it doesn't support my  VW Polo  2.0L Highline (9N) either but it does support the the following list of VAG vehicles.

Audi A3
Audi A4
Audi A6
Audi A8
Audi A8L
Audi All road
Audi Cabriolet
Audi S4
Audi S6
Audi S8
Audi TT

Volkswagen Beetle
Volkswagen Bora
Volkswagen Eurovan L5
Volkswagen Eurovan VR6
Volkswagen Golf A3
Volkswagen Golf A4
Volkswagen GTI
Volkswagen Jetta A3
Volkswagen Jetta A4
Volkswagen Passat
Volkswagen Touareg

I don't know if the previous years version (Autel D900 2012) supports older vehicles like 2002-2010, but am of the opinion that all newer scan tools are backward compatible though I may be wrong. Anyway, the Autel scan tool is really cool, it comes with a mini CD containing a pdf file of all supported vehicles. I would have thought they would include a list of generic DTCs for Chassis / Powertrain (P-codes), Body (B-codes)  and Network (U-codes) for easy of identification. What this implies is that you will have to either find these lists online, save them as pdfs or print them or access the internet resources to identify the codes every time you car throws you a DTC.
