VOLKSWAGEN e-GOLF

IS IT TIME TO DITCH VOLKSWAGEN?

The year 2016 is fast coming to and end but will always be remembered as the year that Volkswagen AG  needed to reverse public perception over the diesel gate scandal that affected some 11 Million vehicles globally during 2015. With it's hands full with public apologies, court battles, falling share prices, Diesel vehicle recalls and general damage control caused by the negative impact to their brand after admitting  that they circumvented emissions standards; VW have been somewhat curtailed from their key business of manufacturing cars.

With the uncertainty regarding the future of diesel, especially considering that the mayors of Paris, Madrid, Athens and Mexico City pledged to ban all diesel cars by 2025. And with the ever looming legislative imperative to cut down on carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and other harmful gases, automotive manufacturers as a whole have started to seriously invest in electric-powered-car technology.

Volkswagen produced the Volkswagen e-Golf hatchback which is however not a purposely built electric car but rather shares the powertrain hardware of the Golf MK7 MQB (Modularer Querbaukasten) Typ 5G, but  fitted with an electric motor in place of its petrol/ diesel powered engine. The e-Golf is in direct competition with other purpose  built electric cars from  several manufacturer's vehicles, like the Renault ZOE hatchback, Hyundai Ioniq Electric, Tesla Model S hatchback, Tesla Model X SUV, BMW i3 hatchback, Nissan Leaf hatchback and the Kia Soul hatchback. Be that as it may, VW has sold more than 25 000 units worldwide since 2014. The VW e-Golf matches the competition in range, but the the battery management doesn't have an  active cooling system which seriously affects longevity. VW hasn't in anyway been innovative nor produced anything new. Their VW e-Golf doesn't offer anything more than the competition already does and certainly amounts to less bang for your buck. Apparently the Renault ZOE hatchback seems to be the pure electric vehicle that's leading the EV race in virtually all categories.

However, VW has always been promoting “Clean Diesel” as an alternative to hybrid and electric vehicles, thus pushing their 2009–2015 Volkswagen Jetta 2.0L TDI, 2010–2015 Volkswagen Golf 2.0L TDI, 2010–2015 Audi A3 2.0L TDI, 2012–2015 Volkswagen Beetle 2.0L TDI, 2012–2015 Volkswagen Passat 2.0L TDI,  etc, globally. It has now come to light that not only has Volkswagen cheated on emission testing with the 2.0L TDI engines, but also on the 3.0L  fitted in the 2009–2015 Audi Q7 3.0L V-6 TDI, 2009–2016 Volkswagen Touareg 3.0L V-6 TDI, 2013–2016 Porsche Cayenne Diesel 3.0L V-6.

Volkswagen had hardly settled to pay $14.7 billion and announced a buyback schedule, thinking  it was putting an end to the Dieselgate scandal when the German weekly newspaper 'Bild am Sonntag' and the 'Wall Street Journal', citing unnamed sources reporting that the California Air Resources Board (CARB) have found new Emissions-Cheat Device / emissions-lowering software on an Audi. Test results  revealed that the Audi was emitting less carbon dioxide than it did during normal use, but when the steering wheel is turned more than 15 degrees, this program would shut off, detecting that the test had completed. The Wall Street Journal alleges that Audi management specifically detailed the defeats during their meetings.

This affects all VW owners and by the looks of things, other car manufacturers have surpassed Volkswagen in several categories. Looking at comparisons in Overall, Reliability, Build Quality, Running Cost, Performance, Road Handling, Ride Quality, Ease of driving, Seat Comfort, Practicality, Car Tech, Volkswagen is either doing very badly or in some cases doesn't feature at all. Volkswagen was lying in 10th position on the top 10 selling cars globally but has subsequently been  surpassed by Tesla Motor Company, that is a new entry into the car market or rather the EV market.

Fortunately for VW, its subsidiary Audi is still in the race even though it lost 6% in sales compared to the previous year as can be seen on the "Cars Top 10" slide.  Porsche  is also in the running but there doesn't seem to be stats available as yet. Looking at the three stats sheets above, it can be clearly seen the VW lies 19th for Build Quality, 19th for Running Cost, 16th for Ride Quality but for Overall  and Reliability it doesn't even feature. What were we thinking when be bought into Volkswagen? I am seriously thinking of turning my VW Polo into an EV, then I won't have any more engine problems, especially not issues associated with that pesky EPC light and Limp mode home.

VW/AUDI ENGINE/ RADIATOR COOLING FAN CONTROL MODULE

VW/AUDI ENGINE/ RADIATOR COOLING FAN & CONTROL MODULE

The radiator is an integral part of each and every VW, Audi, Skoda and Seat vehicle. Its main objective is to keep the engine oil cool which in turn keeps all the moving parts of the engine cool. Most cars have a radiator fan with a separate fan for the air conditioner however, VAG vehicles have an integrated Radiator and Condenser Fan Assembly,  as can be seen in the image below. Be that as it may, it is not a one size fits all situation. Virtually every VW, Audi, Seat and Skoda vehicle category has a slightly different fan which is very evident when looking at the different three character alphanumeric prefix and the alpha suffix in their part numbers. View the list below to see what I mean.
Radiator and Condenser Fan Assembly.  The fan on the right is 360mm in diameter
with a 4-pin main connector rated at 300W.
The fan on the left is 295mm  with a 2-pin
female connector, and rated at 200W.
The flip side of the Radiator and Condenser Fan Assembly

Be aware that a VW Polo 9N and 6R have different fans, an Audi A3 and a Q7 have different fans, a Skoda Fabia and a Roomster have different fans, a Seat Ibiza and a Seat Leon have different fans and the same and the same goes for Passat, Golf, Beetle, Tiguan, Touran, Fox, Transporter, Jetta, etc...  Having said all that, suffice to say that all these fans are troublesome, they burn out, the fins disingrates, they go open circuit and I've even known a few to go short circuit and blow its 30 amp fuse.

This list is by no means complete and there are probably a few dozen more variations. These fans are made  by Brose
(Puebla/Mexico),   Behr Hella Services GmbH (Germany), Wenzhou (Mainland China) and several other an OE manufacturer expressly for the Volkswagen Group with OEM replacement part numbers 1K0959455DT, 1K0959455CQ, 1K0959455N, 1K0959455DL, 1K0959455FE, 1K0959455FJ, etc.  These are predominantly the 300W, 4-pin main connector with 2-pin female secondary connector type, guaranteed to fit the following VW and Audi models.

2006-2013 Audi A3
2008-2015 Audi TT
2009-2015 Audi TTS
2012-2014 Audi TTRS

2009-2015 Volkswagen Tiguan

The 360mm Radiator fan, notice the four wires in the plug, two thick and two thin.

However, in order to avoid future problems, it is highly recommenced by the fan manufactures that the controller module should be replaced together with correct fan.  The list below are just a few of the radiator controller modules / relays that support the glut of VAG fans. These relays are  VIN specific, so please verify existing part number with the supplied part for correctness.  These contollers are manufactured in Hungary,  Brazil, and Germany.

4 and 14 Pin radiator controller module

4 and 10 pin radiator controller module

As mentioned earlier, the fans and controllers are troublesome but the German manufactured version is a lot better and thus last much longer but it is also pricier.  Notice that the main part number on both the above images are the same except for its prefix. The real difference is that the top module has 14 contacts on its right side connector whereas the middle module has only 10 and the bottom module has only 6.  The 2 images below gives you  good idea of the variations in modules. The final image shows how these modules burn.

Main and secondary connectors with 4 and 10 pins respectively.
The secondary plug has 14 pins

This is what happens to the modules made in Hungary and Brazil.

VW LOGIN CODES

VW LOGIN CODES

The "login" codes listed below work on many of the following Volkswagen vehicles listed in alphabetically. In order to use them you need a scan tool with the appropriate data connector plugged into your car's DLC connector.  VCDS software and its dual-K+CAN cable is probably your best option but is fairly expensive compared to the other ranges of DIY scan tools.  NB! Use these codes below at your own risk. If you don't have the necessary knowledge or expertise to make adaptation changes to your car's internal electronic module then it's best to leave them alone and refer these changes or logins to an automotive  professional, or at least someone knowledgeable about OBDII Diagnostic Trouble codes (DTC), vehicle  modules, intelligent sensors, the binary system, electronics and data link protocol transmission. These are extremely helpful if you've bee having one heck of a time trying to "login" to your instrument cluster to adapt some keys. Used incorrectly could turn your ECU into a brick so practice caution.

VAG 405 SCAN TOOL

VAG405 SCAN TOOL

A week ago I  ordered a VAG405 scan tool from an online store. This scan tool is essentially a dedicated stand-alone OEM level diagnostic device for scanning Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda, Seat, VW Golf, VW GTI , VW Polo, VW Jetta, VW Beetle, VW Passat, VW Touareg, vehicles... etc. Restated, it's a scan tool specific to VAG vehicles manufactured since 1990 to the current day, yet it is quite unlike the Autel D900 diagnostic scan tool I evaluated in a previous blog which is not VAG specific but can scan several makes of vehicles.

As can be seen, it can scan Golf 3, Golf 4 Beetle, New Beetle, Passat.....

It also scans the Polo, Sharan, Lupo, Bora and the Transporter, etc...

However, when the scan tool arrived, I expected something much smaller, like perhaps the size of a Samsung S7, but to my surprise it was actually quite substantial, sporting a large easy to read backlit LCD with OBD/EOBD functionality. The box also included a nylon carry case, an OBD2 cable, a USB cable and a VAG405 user's manual.

Initially, I was intrigued by the general claims made by the advert and reiterated on  the actual box it which it was packaged. It stated that  the VAG405 scan tool reads most electronic controlled modules and erases Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) from the ECU's non-volatile memory triggered by the Engine, Transmission, ABS, Airbags, Climatic control (AC), Steering wheel, Immobilizer, Instrument cluster and Central electronics, etc. That it reads and clears generic trouble codes on VAG vehicles using either ISO 9141-2 ("CARB"), or ISO 1430 ("KWP-2000") and ISO-15765 ("CAN") protocols for the latest cars and can even resets the MIL light, airbag, ABS and a host of other  OBDII systems.

And that it can also resets oil service light and retrieve the ECU embedded VIN (Vehicle Information Number) as well as display I/M readiness.

All of this just sounded too good to be true so I just had to get one. But after running tests I am sorry to say that I am not too impressed with it. Not because it is brick but that it is rather inclined towards cars built prior to y2k.  I found that the VAG405 timed-out and froze when scanning for trouble codes, while displaying "Please Wait" on its LCD screen. In order to reset it, I had to physically unplug the 16 pin DLC then reconnect, else I was going to wait forever.  I assume the "Please Wait" (timeout) is an incompatibility between the non-volitile memory used in my 2007 VW Polo 2.0L Highline and that used in VW prior to y2k. However, most of the other functions appear to be compatible.

I like the fact that it is powered from the car's battery via the DLC and therefore doesn't need batteries but a nice to have would have at least been an on-off switch fitted to the scan tool, to reset the scan tool when it freezes. The software is fairly simplistic and easy to use, though rather limited since it doesn't allow you to change module coding. I couldn't retrieve my car's embedded VIN and I don't think this VAG405 can't retrieve it from  any later model VAG vehicle. It is a very nifty scan tool and great value for money if you own an older VW vehicle or Audi but steer clear of it if your car is newer that year 2000. Perhaps this peculiarity is specific to my scan tool yet everything else seem to function as per claim in the advert and on the box.

Below is a series of photographs that I uploaded to demonstrate the functionality of this scan tool.

Failed communication occurred several times but after unplugging DLC and
reinserting comms appeared to be much better.

The software is quite informative, guiding you to causes of comms errors.
Link Error! This happened when I scanned the Steering Control Module and the Radio Control Module, both of which was present and responded to the Autel D900 scan tool.

OBD readiness tests of the 8 monitors, 6 of which are feature in the above image and
2 are featured in the image below, all of which pass,

The first 6 Control Modules, A peculiarity I picked up is that the Airbags is listed before ABS which
isn't normal compared to other dedicated scan tools and computerized scan tool software.

Control Modules 16 -25

Control modules 35 -56

I don't believe that there are no stored codes because I know there are airbag error codes stores which I determined using VCDS. Like I mentioned earlier, the VAG405 is more suited to vehicles manufactured prior to y2k.

VOLKSWAGEN'S EXISTENCE THREATENING CRISES

Volkswagen's Knock-on / Snowball effect

During September of 2015 Volkswagen AG admitted that they created sophisticated software that could  determined when the cars in which it was installed were tested by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) thus able to turn on the pollution controls but once all wheels were in rotation and the steering wheel was turned, the cheat software turned off. The cars implicated in Volkswagen's emissions scandal include the VW Jetta TDI, the VW Beetle, VW Golf  Model 2009-2015 TDI's, the Audi A3 and the Passat 2014- 015 model .

Apparently Volkswagen cheated at emissions tests for seven years before being caught by the International Council on Clean Transportation. With the result that all sales of affected VW cars were stopped. In a the inquests that followed Volkswagen was found guilty and liable to compensate all the car owners who were cheated.

The owners of the 482,000 Volkswagen 2-liter diesel vehicles implicated in the company's emissions scandal  could each get as much as $7,000 because the automaker is willing to shell out over $10 billion in a civil settlement to U.S. car owners, in order to make things right. The automaker is expected to award each of these  car owners between $1,000 and $7,000 and will attempt to repair as many of the automobiles as it can, at no cost to the consumers.

European are also shouting compensation and Europe's Industry Commissioner Elzbieta Bienkowska  says it would be biased and very unfair of  Volkswagen to treat European customers  differently  because of different legal system, and that Volkswagen (VOW) should monetarily   compensate European customers same compensation as US drivers. And she added "Treating consumers in Europe differently than U.S. consumers is no way to win back trust,"  However  VW officials in Europe said that they will repair vehicles and remove illegal software, but have no intention to pay consumers compensation, arguing they suffered no loss.

As Volkswagen prepares to spend $10.2 billion to buy back vehicles in the U.S. a South Korean Volkswagen executive has been arrested after a warrant was issued by the Seoul District Court for charges related to Volkswagen's emissions cheating. Claiming the executive should have submitted test results for new cars but tried to fool the system by submitting test results for previous models. In what could mean even more trouble for  Volkswagen, the VW executive told prosecutors he altered the software for the electronic control units based on direct orders from Volkswagen management. Volkswagen Korea is facing class-action lawsuits from Korean owners who are demanding compensation similar to what has been offered to owners in the U.S.

From this it is clear that the Snowball effect will soon go global and evey country will jump on the band wagon in order to get a piece of Volkswagen. The million dollar question is, " Will Volkswagen survive a 80 billion USD "existence -threatening  crises.

EPC DASHBOARD WARNING LIGHT

EPC DASHBOARD WARNING LIGHT

VW, Audi, Skoda and SEAT vehicles are crammed with wonderous technology, ranging from various electronic modules that overseas their general functionality to hoards of sensors that monitor how these vehicles behave and actuators that respond to software controlled decision making elements. One could say that collectively they give cars a degree of Artificial Intelligence and their seamless integration makes motoring a lot easier. But when something goes wrong, there is also a swarm of warning lights on the instrument cluster that will flash at you until you take corrective action. However, knowing exactly what each warning light flashing on its dashboard is trying to tell you, is a completely different story. Even though some of these light are self explanatory and fairly obvious to understand, others are not, and  can be interpreted by looking in the owner’s manual. Knowing what these warning lights mean is really important to drivers because they can preempt a potential breakdown or full-on engine failure, insulating you from expensive repair bills.

As a general rule, warning lights illuminated either red or amber (yellow /orange), though a blue light is often used to indicate high beam and green lights are used to mean indicate left and right  turn signals. On a VW Polo a red warning light emphatically means that something needs to be done immediately. For example, the Oil pressure warning light, or the low brake fluid level light, or the parking brake warning light, or the Coolant level low / coolant temperature high light, illuminates red or flashes red as a danger sign and needs immediate attention. Failure to remedy can result in the engine seizing, the brakes failing, damaging your rear disks and brake pads, or the engine overheating resulting in a possible blown head gasket or worse, respectively. On different model VAG vehicles, the use of red and amber light may overlap.

An amber / yellow /orange light  on the other hand serves to be rather informative and draws the driver]s attention to a potential problem or a problems that needs to be remedied soonest. For example the amber Anti-lock braking system (ABS) light, or the amber Airbag light, or the amber Immobilizer light, or the Brake pad wear light, or the Engine fault Onboard diagnosis (OBD) light, none of which will impede driveability nor endanger the driver. But this isn't strictly true especially when encountering the dreaded yellow EPC light

WHAT IS AN EPC LIGHT?

EPC stands for Electronic Power Control and has  much to do with controlling the electronic throttle hence it is sometimes referred to as the "Electronic Pedal Control". Probably because the throttle valve is actuated by an electric motor rather than a physical cable between the accelerator pedal and the throttle control valve. In essence the engine control unit responds to the sensor on the accelerator pedal and sends a corresponding command to the throttle valve positioner via four wires which is commonly known as "Drive by wire". But the EPC is much more than just an Electronic Pedal Control. Any malfunctions in the either the "Drive by Wire" circuit  or its associated sensors are detected by self-diagnosis and indicated by the EPC warning light.

The Electronic Power Control (EPC) is a circuit made up of various engine components or sub circuits that collectively addresses torque. In reality it should have been called "Electronic Torque Control". Should  a problem arise in the torque system, it correspondingly illuminates the easily identifiable yellow/amber/orange word "EPC" in the instrument panel.  The EPC circuit's decision making elements are embedded into the ECU which is responsible for the electric throttle valve positioning and overall torque-oriented engine management.

As such the ECU has to gathers all torque demand inputs in order to correctly calculate the appropriate control actions. These inputs includes, the Engine speed, the Engine load signal fetched from the air mass meter, the Vehicle speed, the shift point of an automatic gearbox, whether or not the air conditioner compressor is ON or OFF, whether or not the the cruise control system is engaged, whether or not the Traction Control System is engaged  or the braking  system is applied.

The combination Brake light / brake pedal switch provides a braking input to the ECU, failure of the switch to send data of the drivers foot on the brake pedal can trigger the EPC light in certain VAG vehicles, but definitely on the VW Polo. Don't be fooled by the brake lights that are working, when the brake pedal is depressed because it does not imply that the brake pedal switch is functioning as it should. In similar fashion the Clutch Pedal Switch provides cruise control input to the ECU, engaging the clutch, automatically disengages the cruise control which could also trigger an EPC episode.

This EPC light will come on when there is a problem:-

1) With either of the accelerator pedal senders.
2) With either of the throttle angle senders.
3) With the throttle valve control unit
4) With the accelerator / throttle harness.
5) With the throttle adaptation.
6) With grime and carbon build-up in the throttle body.
7) If the the Throttle Valve Control Unit is replaced.
8) With the Brake Light Switch
9) With one of the Knock Sensors.
10 With the Mass Air Meter (MAF).
11) with the Engine control unit
12) With the Ignition system
13) With the Fuel injection system
14) With the ABS
15) With the Power-assisted steering system
16) With Lambda regulation (fuel consumption signal)
17) With the Alternator
18) With the TCM

Bearing in mind the throttle valve control unit is located on the intake manifold and needs to ensure that the engine is supplied with the appropriate and proper air flow. By implication the MAF measures the air flow and should there be a problem with it, the  ECU will not be able to calculate the proper torque and possible go into EPC mode. The consolation is that every fault that occurs would normally create a DTC entry. So the best way to determine the cause of the EPC light coming on, associated with loss of power and limp mode, is to do a diagnostic scan.

AUTEL D900 SCAN TOOL

AUTEL D900 SCAN TOOL

The modern day car in its current incarnation has increasingly become more and more electrotechnical than mechanical and technological advancements are constantly on the incline.  It is therefore  quite appropriate to say that vehicle owners need to become electromechanical savvy. In my opinion, the way forward is to invest in a scan tool for your particular make and model car. Since most people are familiar with Cell Phones, Decoders, Set Top Boxes, PVR, DVR and Televisions with various menus, or computers, access points and routers  with various wizards, navigating a scan tool would be relatively easy. A scan tool is an indispensable device for modern car diagnostics and is a technological marvel that's going to save you time and money, but only if you are willing to embrace the technology.

In a previous blog I discussed VCDS which I think is a really fantastic piece of software with its hardware interface combination specific to VAG vehicles. The amount of Onboard information that is accessible with VCDS is astounding and it is literally beter than the factory  VAS Scan Tool used by VW /AUDI /SKODA / SEAT agents. In fact, in some cases VCDS  will even retrieve more faults than the VAS tools.  Be that as it may, as fantastic as VCDS is, it has major shortcomings for vehicle owners in general. Since VCDS is VAG specific, all other vehicle owners are at a loss to its technical capabilities and would have to look at other scan tools from  companies like  Auto Boss, Launch X431, Autel Maxidas DS708, Pro-Link iQ,  Mentor Touch ET6500, OTC Pegisys, Craftsman - 20899, G-Scan Oceania, Bosch 3824, etc, who produce commercial multivehicle scan tools. These companies cater for the automotive service industry since their scan tools are quite pricey and far beyond the budget of the average car owner.  If VCDS was multivehicle, it would be as good if not better than most commercial scan tools. However, since this is not the case,  Autel has come to their aid of the average car owner. Autel has a low cost handheld scan tool that is multivehicle compatible that supports the following list of vehicles.

Acura, Audi, BMW, Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Daewoo, Dodge, Eagle, Ford, Geo, GMC, Honda, Hummer, Hyundai, Infiniti, Isuzu, Jaguar, Jeep, Kia, Land Rover, Lexus, Lincoln, Mazda, Mercedes Benz, Mercury, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, Porsche, Plymouth, Saab, Saturn, Scion, Suzuki, Toyota, Volkswagen, Volvo.

I acquired the 2015 version because of its versatility because it supports several models of each of the above mentioned vehicles. I wanted it to diagnose my Renault but discovered that it unfortunately does't support Renault and even more surprisingly it doesn't support my  VW Polo  2.0L Highline (9N) either but it does support the the following list of VAG vehicles.

Audi A3
Audi A4
Audi A6
Audi A8
Audi A8L
Audi All road
Audi Cabriolet
Audi S4
Audi S6
Audi S8
Audi TT

Volkswagen Beetle
Volkswagen Bora
Volkswagen Eurovan L5
Volkswagen Eurovan VR6
Volkswagen Golf A3
Volkswagen Golf A4
Volkswagen GTI
Volkswagen Jetta A3
Volkswagen Jetta A4
Volkswagen Passat
Volkswagen Touareg

I don't know if the previous years version (Autel D900 2012) supports older vehicles like 2002-2010, but am of the opinion that all newer scan tools are backward compatible though I may be wrong. Anyway, the Autel scan tool is really cool, it comes with a mini CD containing a pdf file of all supported vehicles. I would have thought they would include a list of generic DTCs for Chassis / Powertrain (P-codes), Body (B-codes)  and Network (U-codes) for easy of identification. What this implies is that you will have to either find these lists online, save them as pdfs or print them or access the internet resources to identify the codes every time you car throws you a DTC.
