DIAGNOSING EPC LIGHT PROBLEMS

DIAGNOSING EPC LIGHT PROBLEMS

VW Polo EPC light goes on and the car won't rev. Audi MIL and EPC light turn on and car goes into lip mode. SEAT suddenly has no acceleration yet has maximum of 1200 RPM. SKODA accelerator problem, won't rev. Audi EPC light on and transmission is locked in park.
Audi and VW crankshaft position sensors.

Question?

Hello mate...
My car was running really sweet when suddenly I'm having throttle issues! I was going to my girls house when all of a sudden, smack bang in the middle of the road, I have no acceleration. The car just cut the revs into idle and causing the EPC light on the dashboard to light up. I managed to get it off the road out of the traffic. Several attempts later to get her to rev up but  nope, absolutely nothing. So I phoned the towing service and the dude  checked under the bonnet to make sure everything was in place so he disconnected the battery for a while so it would reset the computer. It still wouldn't rev, so he hauled it onto the truck and brought it to my house. My neighbour Freddy has a VCDS which he plugged in and these fault codes showed up. I'm desperately in need of help because I have no idea how  to  solve this problem?

Answer!

Hay George. This is quite interesting that both your accelerator potentiometers and both your throttle body potentiometers are acting up at the same time. Normally I would say that your accelerator pedal needs to be replaced if only G79/G185 flags repeated DTCs. Alternatively say that your throttle body needs  cleaning and adaptation if G187/G188 flags repeated DTCs. But this is certainly not the case though both these circuits are notorious for "No Throttle Response", limp mode and turning on the EPC light.  However to me it looks more like the voltage supply line to both devices is acting up, that it's intermittent.  Since the throttle and the accelerator are each connected directly to the same control module (ECU) I'm tempted to say that the ECU plug is probably loose or corroded or the fuse holder that supplies the ECU with terminal 30 (12V unswitched) and the relay that supplies terminal  15 (12V switched) needs to be checked for proper contact and corrosion. What I am willing to say is that you have a wiring harness problem, so check continuity between the ECU and the accelerator pedal 6 pin plug and the ECU and the Throttle body 6 pin plug. Make certain to do adaptation afterwards and check throttle valve control in group  060“ (G187/G188),  and especially 62 (G187/G188 & G79/G185), and 63 (Kick-down) and if you have a cruise control group 66 as well.

Question?

I'm Renshaw and I have an Audi A4 1.8T. When I started my car from cold, the EPC light came on and the engine just stalled. Made a couple more attempts to start but engine just cranks and  wouldn't start. After a while I tried  again and it started just fine and it drove fine. The following day  I couldn't start the engine again. So like before I waited a while and it started fine and I drove all week without any EPC problems, until this morning while standing in peak hour traffic my car just died.  After a few tries the car finally started but while I was driving both the EPC and the MIL (check engine light) came on, the engine lost power and was idling at 1200 RPM. This happened a few time over the past month and I'm really loosing my patient with my Audi A4.  So when it happened again I limped to the service agents  who got the 2 DTC errors:  P0321 Ignition/Distributor Engine Speed Input Circuit Range/Performance and P0322 Ignition/Distributor Engine Speed Input Circuit No Signal, but they could get the car to switch off like it did with me. Something like the toothache goes away when you get to the dentist. Anyway, I've search the Internet forums for a  EPC problem similar to mine but found nothing. I still don't have any idea what's going on. Can you please help me and I would be very appreciative and thank you.

Answer!

Hi Renshaw, thanks for your question. The problem you describing is fairly common on Audi which normally flags any or all of the following DTCs - P0320, P0321, P0322 and  P0323  at the same time. This is undoubtedly or rather more often than not caused by your Engine Speed (RPM) sensor signal (crankshaft sensor) that is out of phase. Bear in mind that your car has a DIS and not a mechanical distributor which is normally driven by a gear on the camshaft. This implies that your camshaft / crankshaft have embedded  magnets that energizes  a hall sensor (crankshaft sensor) or an inductive sensor mounted on the cylinder block which  measures crankshaft speed (interval), that provides the engine speed signal to the ECU. It also doubles-up as the signal that determines the time and duration of the ignition (spark) as well as injector timing. Depending on the model, the crankshaft sensor is next to the oil filter. Crankshaft position sensor (G28) failure is also common on the new VW Polo the new Jetta.

NB!
If you need help with your EPC problem or an explanation of your diagnostic scan and willing to share the findings with fellow Vag owners, feel free to link to this post and upload  your question and a scan of your car. Not every problem can be dealt since there are a fair amount of overlap / common problems, but I will try my very best to answer as many as possible.

    1. Based on the fault codes you present, basically eluded to the fact that the problem lies with an erratic voltage feed to the accelerator pedal sensors. Either the battery is low and the reference voltage is below the expected value, or the potentiometers on the accelerator pedal are at fault, either scratchy (dust inside) or the carbon tracks are worn through and has therefore reached end of life. Considering you vehicle is a 2006, it most likely has in excess of 200k on the clock and that's a lot of accelerator pedal movements.

Below is a list of codes related to your problem. As can be seen there are 10 codes, five relating to G79 and five relating to G185. The first of each presents an electrical problem. The second of each presents and implausible signal, implying the ECU doesn't know what to make of the signal. The third of each presents a signal that's lower than expected hence the ecu switches to a different mode (limp mode) because it cannot use the low signal. The fourth of each is the opposite of the third and the fifth signal is intermittent, implying the signal is present then not, so once again the ECU is stumped and goes into an alternative mode. It is most likely that your accelerator pedal needs replacement.

      1) P0220 Throttle / Accelerator pedal position sensor 2 (G188) lectrical circuit voltage Supply malfunction
      2) P0221 Angle Sensor 2 for Throttle valve drive (G188) implausible signal
      3) P0222 Angle sensor 2 for throttle valve drive (G188) signal too small or too low
      4) P0223 Angle Sensor 2 for Throttle (G188), signal too high or too large
      5) P0224 Angle sensor 2 for throttle valve drive (G188) circuit Intermittent

      1) P0225 Throttle pedal position sensor (G79) electrical circuit voltage supply malfunction
      2) P0226 Sendors 1 and 2 for accelerator pedal position (G79) + (G185) implausible signal
      3) P0227 Sendor 1 for accelerator pedal position (G79) signal too small or too low
      4) P0228 Sendor 1 for accelerator pedal position (G79) signal too large or too high
      5) P0229 Throttle / accelerator pedal position sensor (G79) circuit Intermittent

  3. Hi i have a vw polo 2003 1.0 L when i turn on the ac somebtimes epc light comes on and the car struggles to rev i checked the throttle boddy it hardly opens if full pedal push . Sometimes this happens when im in traffic jam .i dont know what to do and dont have vag cuse im in Egypt >.<

It seems likely that you battery isn't charging properly or else the battery is at the end of its life. When you turn on the AC, the 12V in insufficiently stable and the reference voltage for the EPC circuit is thus affected which causes the EPC circuit/light to come on. Check the sulfuric acid/water level in your battery, it may low hence you have reference voltage issues. However, when the car goes into limp mode, it automatically shuts off the AC. Regarding the throttle body, it is electronically controlled so when you floor the accelerator pedal the EPC circuit restricts the butterfly from opening. When the problem is fixed you should manage to get WOT.

    1. Bear in mind that when you turn on the ignition before starting the car, the EPC light should come on for at least 3 seconds whilst the ECU is doing it diagnostic test then it should switch off. This is normal and expected. If the EPC comes on while driving and he car goes into limp mode it would be worth your while to spray some Wynn's Air Intake and Carburetor Cleaner (http://www.wynns.eu/product/air-intake-and-carburetor-cleaner/) into your throttle body. Also Unplug the 6 pin plug on the accelerator pedal and spray both the male and female plugs with electrical contact spray 9http://www.wd40specialist.com/products/contact-cleaner), the label must say electrical contact. Hopefully that should sort out your problem because I don't think you have any components that has gone fault. I assume it's just a poor contact or carbon buildup in the throttle body.

  8. Hi, I have a similar EPC problem with my VW polo 1.2 highline. Car goes in limp mode when the EPC symbol shows in dash board and max speed achievable is 10-15 km / hour. VW service person is asking for replacement of throttle body which costs around 30K. I am in a confusion whether to spend 30K or look for advice from another Vw service station. I have driven my car for 31K and it is a 5 year old car. Please suggest.

    1. Hi Ajit Patra

If your VW service center diagnosed that it's your throttle body, based on a DTC from your car, then it very likely is the throttle body that's causing the fault. However, it doesn't mean replacement will cure the problem because there are several faults that can cause the EPC light to come an and cause the car to go into limp mode. They may have erred in their diagnoses and will charge you for something that's not faulty. There are loads of VW owners who can bear testimony to their throttle bodies being replaced, only for the EPC fault returns a few days later. I suggest you try cleaning out your throttle body with Wynn's Air Intake and Carburetor Cleaner before you send your car for repairs to anyone. Just be careful not to break the thin wire inside your MAF. Perhaps your throttle body just needs its adaptation to be redone. Try to have your car scanned then post the results on this site then it would be easier to guide you in the right direction.

    2. I am in same exact situation now seeing the malfunction light on and the service guys said it's because of throttle valve during my 4th year service done this week. But they said that I can continue to use as long as it's not giving any issue to drive. Is that okay to continue driving with the malfunction light on for the throttle issue. I think this light could be showing up for so long and I am not aware of this light purpose and I did not face any issues. Your suggestions would help me. Thanks

  9. Good morning all,
I keep getting a code on my 03 Audi A4 1.8T it refers to evap canister issues. Ive got a VAG scanner that i erase the code with and car runs good for a little while then code pops back up. Now I did the readiness test and these things have popped up EGR System fail #1 O2 sensor fail #2 A/C system fail #3 Evap system Fail #4 and finally #5 Catalyst Fail!! Ive replaced injectors including wiring, O2 sensors 1 only a list of other items and still no idea what else that I should do. Don't want just anyone to tinker with my car and don't necessarily want to be taken advantage of by dealerships. Nomore time or patience with the guessing game that is quite expensive. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance
