ELECTRO-HYDRAULIC POWER STEERING FAILURE
In a matter of just a few short days, I've received a flurry of assistance requests from several VW owners, all of whom seem to have power steering issues of some sort or the other. These issues ranging from complete failure of power steering to intermittent steering assist, to stiff and hard to steer. Among the vehicles affected are VW Jettas, Volkswagen transporters, Volkswagen Passats, VW MKIV TDI's and Golf Mk5s. Unfortunately specifics about steering problem can vary tremendously because some VAG vehicles are Hydraulically controlled, whereas some are electronic and others are ally controlled, all of which use slightly different technologies and components often spacely dissimilar.
This implies some vehicles will have a Power steering pump as part of the steering rack assembly whereas others will have a power steering motor / hydraulic fluid reservoir a good meter separated from the steering rack. The following is a general overview of the operation of VAG power steering systems. But what all these systems have in common, is the dreaded yellow steering light on the instrument panel which lights up for a 3- 4 seconds when the ignition is switched on but goes out after the engine is started. This is part of the self test that checks all electronic modules and mechanical mechanisms are synchronised to work together in harmony. However when the Servotronic warning lamp K92 stays on after the engine is started, there is definitely a fault with the power steering system.
When this happens it is a good idea to book the car in for repairs or do the repairs yourself because it could be quite expensive. Either way get the vehicle off the public road because loss of steering while driving can be very dangerous if not fatal especially going around corners because of the possibility of over steer. An electro-hydraulic power steering system is fairly intricate because its control modules are interconnected. The Power steering control module controls the hydraulic pump motor which produces the hydraulic pressure needed for the steering servo assistance. But in order to this, it needs signals from the 'Powers steering sensor' which is located in the steering column and from the speedometer sensor via the 'Instrument cluster control Module' which is responsible for turning on the yellow steering wheel symbol should there be a problem. And lastly the Power steering controller also needs the engine speed data from the 'Motronic control Unit'. It also needs a 12V supply from terminal 30 as well as 12 volts supply from terminal 15 and of course an earth connection. The power wires are fairly thick and chunky which implies high current delivery. Poor electrical connection can cause arching which will disrupt functionality. Loss of any of signals or voltages to the Power Steering control module for even a few seconds will interrupt steering assist and make the car hard to steer.
In a previous blog I described the steering loss I encountered due to loss of voltage to my car's hydraulic pump motor because my positive battery terminal was loose which resulted in intermittent supply to the main steering control module. It is worthwhile to to check the level of the Hydraulic fluid in the reservoir when you suffer hard of stiff steering. If there is a leak, the hydraulic pump motor cannot produce the necessary pressure resulting in stiff steering. If the fluid is low, refill the reservoir but don't start the engine but get someone to continually turn the steering wheel between the left and right extremes while waiting for all air bubbles to surface. When the appearance of air bubbles ceases, it would be ok to start the engine. It is also worth your while to check for DTC's with a scan tool. Should there be a steering error, deleting often restores steering assist. The LenkhilfeTRW V270 used in the Polo 9N is normally coded as 10110 which can be changed to 10120, 10130 or 10140 in order to incrementally increase the stiffness of the steering. ReplyDeleteThis is my issue (and battery history) also! Albeit without the 90kmph. Yet.... I also had leaking water pump replaced same time as battery... curious.
DeleteHi mmy power steering on the VCD scan was reset n it worked thereafter. I drove the car for ten minutes then it turned hard. I stopped but no warning light switched on I then open the fuse box and the glow plug 100 was warm. I took it out and put it back again, the power steering then worked again. But it continued doing this. What might be the problem. Jetta 5 Tdi. Thanks Jerome
ReplyDeleteHi Guys, your assistance please! Just bought myself a used Vivo Polo 2012 model. After one week i have had major electrical problems as mentioned below
ReplyDeleteABS light comes on
Hand brake light comes on
Alarm
Speedo reading error
Clock says wrong time et etc
Took the car into the agents and they said that the Steering rack and pinion is causing the problem and has to be replaced. They then cleared the errors with the diagnostic tester and after ten days driving the same problems have appeared. I then switch ther vehicle off and start again and then the warning lights goes off again. I really dont nelieve its the fault of the Rack & Pinion could somebody please give me some suggestions on my email please......

hi this is Voks from hatfield VW,Please note that this means that your car was bridged and the kilos were forged to go back.we get a lot of customers who buy cars from other dealerships and when we diagnosis the cars and check the service,we pick up that some cars were on 156000kms on the last service and when the cars come to us after couple of yearss,we find out the car is now on 64000km.

ReplyDeleteHi, I'm having the same problem with a 2008 and the abs light comes on too. Check battery is in good order, check the terminals are tight, perhaps change the flat fuses above the battery just to be sure, check alternator efficiency, check steering fluid levels and any fault codes will have to be cleared. Hope this helps.
ReplyDeleteMy power steering is stiff turning to left or right & the yellow light ist there when this happens , but when i switch the engine off it does not start again please assist.

DeleteMy polo vivo 2010 model powersteering is stiff after oil leak i replace with new rack but now still stiff when turning
ReplyDeleteGood day iam driving a vw polo vivo 1.4 year model 2010 my problem is that when iam starting the veh and switch the headlights on and iam turning the wheels if it standing still or moving the head lights will dim and if then stop turning the wheels the headlights will be fine I have take the vw for diagnostic but no errors codes, and when i start the vehicle all the light on the dashboard goes of so I have done the following replace all the steering oil with the correct oil fron agents and bleed system through, clean all connecting earth points on veh meaning with sandpaper and clean proper with electrical cleaner liquid and test al wire conuoity it is fine, then clean all the fuses on the battery and inspect for cracks all is in good order do load test on battery and it failed load test so I replaced the battery with the correct size that I went and ask the vw agent for the size of the battery for this veh the battery I size is 646, and then I clean and inspect all 3 of the electrical points and wires on the 3electrical plugs that is on the electrical motor just under the battery box everything is fine meaning point is clean on plugs and motor and all wires is not damage, then I inspect the electrical points on the powersteering sensor that is on the steering rack or colum everything is clean wires not damaged, then I plug the wire that came from the powersteering sensor to one of the 3 electrical plugs on the steering pump out and start the veh then the servotronic yellow warning light is on and stays on the is still not very hard but now if you turn the wheels the head is normal meaning it will not dim like before when you turn the wheels I switch off the veh and plug the powersteering sensor plug back and start the vehicle then all the lights on dashboard is of and if you turn the wheels the headlights will dim again while you turning the wheel an stop dim when you stop turning the wheels what can be the problem the steering is never hard
ReplyDeleteThe same thing is happening with my polo 6 2011 year model.. Its like the power steering is pulling current.... I have a sound when i turn either way... Its a motorised sound similar to like when the fuel pump primes the fuel... Im more worried about that sound of its normal or not but i suspect thats why the lights dim.. Even my center consol and interior light will dim when i just turn the steering and that motorised sound happens
DeleteHi All, I have a 2006 VW Trendline Polo, when turning left there is a slight delay on the wheels, what could possible be the problem.
ReplyDeleteHey hope all is good and well... I have a quick question....i bought me a polo 6....is it normal to get a sound while turning left or right, driving or standing.. Its sounds like a small electric motor thats running only while turning ? Would appreciate any feedback as i dont know should i worry or not... No knocking noises just a plain electronic motorised sound similar to when fuel pump is priming before starting the car
